THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED !!!
When Bostick Communications offered me an anti-diet/be healthy book for review, I have to admit I was intriqued with the marketing concept, so I said yes! Before I could get a chance to read the book, they sent me ANOTHER updated copy with some minor changes.
Synopsis: Wake Up takes on the mass-media-driven myth that everyone should be striving to achieve the perfect body and instead provides an optimistic testament that exercise and eating right will absolutely be life-changing. "But the message of the book," stresses Pearl, "is that to become a success story before you jump in front of a camera for that coveted 'after' picture, you need to make a giant leap of
faith and learn to rethink your expectations."
"If you make lifestyle changes slowly over time and understand how to deal with the chronic state of starvation that those of us who are overweight have to deal with when we diet, it is possible to drop pounds and keep them off," says Michelle. "It is important to understand that willpower has nothing to do with the reasons that you've failed at trying to lose weight in the past, that exercise is a vital component of any weight loss plan and that you must have realistic expectations so that you can be happy with what you achieve and with the new imperfect you."
Pearl discusses the fallacies of the erroneous messages of fitness guru Jillian Michaels and the dangerous game show The Biggest Loser which she also chronicles at www.antibiggestloser.com "The Biggest Loser is about the voyeuristic; the contestants go on the show and put up with it because they are desperate to lose the weight," says Pearl, who has lost 100 pounds twice in her lifetime. "The show exploits every aspect of their desperation and turns them into a sideshow for the sake of a Nielson rating. To the producers and trainers, it might be 'just a game show.' To the people who struggle with obesity, it is a life-and-death situation that is absolutely not a 'game'."
About the author: Michelle Pearl, certified as a group fitness instructor by the American Council on Exercise, is owner of a unique online Imperfect Fitness program at www.imperfectfitness.com She has produced two exercise DVDs and operates the antibiggestloser.com blog to warn of the dangers of quick weight loss gimmicks.
Review: WOW- talk about a anti-be perfect book! This book is like sitting down and dishing with your girlfriend you haven't seen in 3 years! Michelle is honest and blunt. She freely admits genetics are goin g to keep ALOT of us from EVER looking like a Playboy/Victoria's Secrets model! The key to her is understanding this and then determining WHERE you can get to where you are healthy AND happy. So you don't get below say a size 10, if you are fit, ACCEPT it and deal with it! She debunks all the get slim-quick diets and exercise plans in honest, behind the scenes, advice. Her book contains the kernel of truth that ALL girls need to learn at an early age, so they will not make themselves ill/die trying to achieve something they can never be!
Michelle lays out a VERY simple diet and exercise plan that ANYONE can follow, including healthier choices at fast food restaurants (cause sometimes you HAVE to eat out!). Her success stories are honest and share one theme- the choice to MOVE more and change their lives. I can understand Michelle's loathing of the Biggest Loser show as being unrealistic based on her OWN experience (hello, HOW many people go thru that big of a weight loss TWICE?) Jillian Michael's latest comments this week about not wanting to get pregnant because of what it would do to her body REALLY makes you wonder about what is being said to the contestants OFF-camera! I applaud her wish to adopt, but she's offering up a bad body image to youngsters who may look up to her. Michelle would be the trainer I would want in my corner helping me!
