Book Review: Weird Louisiana by Roger

weird louisiana cover
Ok, now to say WEIRD and LOUISIANA in the same sentence is pretty much a misnomer. Louisiana IS weird. There I've said it. But it's OK. Every native will tell you they take PRIDE in that fact. How else do you explain Louisiana politics? All the ghost stories? Mardi Gras masking? So when I had the opportunity to review this book, I KNEW I had to!  It's a Louisiana thing.....

Synopsis: Your travel guide to the land of voodoo, hoodoo, and backwater bayous! Just hearing the name “Louisiana” is enough to conjure up all sorts of strange visions in one’s imagination: haunted Old South plantations, French Quarter mansions, and white marble and limestone towers that house the dead. And, of course, there’s Mardi Gras, the most surreal and extravagant celebration in the country. Author Roger Manley (who caught a “swamp monster” in the bayous behind his family’s home) knows and reveals everything about this state of the weird, wacky, and wonderful.

About the Author: Manley left Texas before his first birthday and has been on the move ever since. He has worked as a photographer, folklorist, curator, filmmaker, and writer interested in everything from outsider artists and tribal peoples to fairy tales and gardens. he has written numerous books and even co-directed a film (Mana-Beyond Belief). For the last several years, he has shared a cozy garret in Montmartre (France), with his wife, writer and photographer, Theadora Brack, and their amazing rubber-band-retrieving kitty, known to the world as Kitty

Review:  If you want to know what makes Louisiana, Louisiana, this is THE book for you. It's hard to explain how all the oddities make the state what it is, but without them, well, it would just be BORING! Alot of these tales I had heard before, others were new to me! If you're going to come visit in Louisiana, this is a perfect book to read BEFORE you come, to give you some ideas about where to visit and oddities to check out! And if you just want to know about the weirdness here, BUY this book! It's an enjoyable read with alot of laughs in between!

Disclosure: I was sent this book by Sterling Books, for review purposes. There was no other compensation, and I was not told how to review it!
