Book Review/ Giveaway: Miss Hildreth Wore Brown, Ancedotes of a Southern Belle by Olivia deBelle Byrd

** THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

welcome to fall yall button 2010

The title alone of today's book drew me to this wonderful little book and I am glad that it did!

Synopsis: Byrd, a self-described Southern Belle, says this collection of humorous essays deals with everything from parties where society ladies wear Christmas trees with blinking lights hanging from their ears, to stories about Sunday church, where a mink coat is mistaken for a possum, all come from personal experiences. "After I was telling one of my many stories for the umpteenth time, my long-suffering husband looked at me with glazed over eyes said,'Why don't you just write this stuff down?' So I did."

With comparisons to Fannie Flagg, Olivia deBelle Byrd offers up storytelling written in the finest Southern tradition. With wit and amusement, Byrd delves into the world of the Deep South with all its unique idiosyncrasies and colloquialisms. Essays in the collection include characters who dance across the page from Great-Aunt Lottie Mae, who is as "old-fashioned and opinionated as the day is long," to Mrs. Brewton who calls everyone "dahling" whether they are darling or not, to Isabella with her passion for mint juleps and drama, both in equal measure.

About the authorOlivia deBelle Byrd was born and bred in the South. She is a graduate of Birmingham-
Southern College and a Kappa Delta. She resides in Panama City, Florida, with her husband, Tommy, and is the proud mother of Tommy Jr. and Elizabeth.

Byrd says she's tickled that people are connecting with the stories. "I grew up with one of those double Southern names that kids just can't wait to make fun of," Byrd says. "Mine was deBelle. So I guess humor was the way I learned to deflect it. Besides, everybody needs a good laugh." You can read an excerpt on Byrd's website! Be sure to check out her book signing page to see if she'll be in your town soon!

Review: As the proud parent of a double-named Southern mini-belle, I was able to totally relate to all the stories in this book! I recognized great aunts, grandmothers, great grandmothers, and yes, even my own mother, myself and my best friends. It has always been amusing to me how many Southernisms are still handed down to subsequent generations-I have caught myself, and my mother, passing them on to our daughter and have to laugh!

Even if you're aren't Southern, the 'being a parent truisms' will find you laughing out loud! This is a super book for all your friends and family, who are true Southern Belles!
