Synopsis: This new mystery tracks the fate of stockbroker Morrie Clay, whose hedge fund hanky-panky in a major client's account is about to be discovered as the client suddenly drowns and two more mysterious deaths occur in their affluent North Carolina lakeside community.

Detective Raker, a recent widower, is skeptical by nature, but his suspicions are fueled by his distrust of those he encounters in his investigation, and by his innate resentment of these smug, privileged pillars of the community.

Meanwhile financial planner and stockbroker Morrie Clay seems to have been given a reprieve from discovery of his unauthorized hedge fund trading when the client mysteriously drowns, but he and his wife Monica -- typical baby boomers easily frightened by the potential for their own personal financial collapse -- scramble to act knowing that Morrie's illicit trading activities will ultimately be revealed.

Detective Raker must wend his way through this well drawn cast of upper middle class characters, a string of unusual deaths and several local authorities all too willing to jump to "acceptable" conclusions so as to avoid any bad publicity or untoward embarrassment in this prestigious little community. Only when the killer's third attempt backfires and claims the wrong victim does Raker's intuitive pursuit begin to pull the final length of string from this ball of tangled motives and social machinations.

About the Author:
John J. Hohn, a South Dakotan by birth, worked over forty years in the financial services industry and retired in 2007 after seventeen years with Merrill Lynch in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He holds an English degree form St. John's University (MN, 1961). Father of five children, he inherited a stepson in his 1986 marriage to Melinda Folger McLeod.

Review:  Hohn gives you a really great background story on what can go wrong in today's world of hedgefunds and stockbrokers, while providing you with a great story. This is one of those mysteries, where the reader knows who the suspect is, but the trick is seeing if the detective can figure it out. Hohn does a great job showcasing human emotions and frailities and how splint second decisions can have severe repercussions.
I highly recommend this book for some great 'sit by the fire' reading!
