Children's Book Review: Hannah by Elke Weiss

Synopsis: Hannah is a little girl with a special and unique gift. She has very, very big ears which enable her to hear things in the world all around her that other people do not notice. She can hear the grass grow, the wind sing, and the ants march one by one. She can hear birds chirping far away and even hear the trees drinking water.

Unfortunately, she is teased and criticized by other children and runs away to be alone. With her extra special powers she finds and befriends a very special and solitary tree and learns about the tragic fate of the trees around her. And now the last tree is threatened as well. Is there any way to save the lone tree from destruction? Will anyone listen to Hannah's cry for help? Instead of just giving up and letting the last tree get cut down, Hannah decides to be brave and do something herself to help save the last tree and create a world worthwhile living in.

Review: Kiddo was immediately entranced by the colors of the illustrations and immediately grabbed it as soon as I got the package open and claimed it as HERS! (sorry, no pix, too many pix, kiddo has had enough of posing for the week!)

The book is aimed at kids from 3-7 years old, but the sub-message of being unique is NOT a bad thing, is suitable for older kids as well. The book gives younger kids a good look on what can happen if the environment around them (nature) is not taken care of. For my kiddo, whose all time favorite movie is Wall-E, this was a reiterration of the concept she had learned from the movie, and she was quick to pick up on that. We also spent some time discussing the sub-message that just because someone is different than you, it doesn't mean to shun them, but you should accept them as they are, for they might have something to teach YOU. It's amazing what even a 3 year old can grasp!

I highly recommend this book for all teachers. Even bible school teachers can use this book to show why even kids should help take care of God's Earth! A definite must have if you have small children!
