Synopsis: In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-adoring Londoners eagerly opened their Strand magazines, anticipating the detective's next adventure, only to find the unthinkable: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had killed their hero off. London spiraled into mourning -- crowds sported black armbands in grief -- and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin.
Then in 1901, just as abruptly as Conan Doyle had "murdered" Holmes in "The Final Problem," he resurrected him. Though the writer kept detailed diaries of his days and work, Conan Doyle never explained this sudden change of heart. After his death, one of his journals from the interim period was discovered to be missing, and in the decades since, has never been found.
Or has it?
When literary researcher Harold White is inducted into the preeminent Sherlock Holmes enthusiast society, The Baker Street Irregulars, he never imagines he's about to be thrust onto the hunt for the holy grail of Holmes-ophiles: the missing diary. But when the world's leading Doylean scholar is found murdered in his hotel room, it is Harold - using wisdom and methods gleaned from countless detective stories - who takes up the search, both for the diary and for the killer.
About the author: Graham Moore is a twenty-eight-year-old graduate of Columbia University, where he received his degree in religious history. He grew up in Chicago, which was very cold, and then moved to New York, which was not really as cold, even though people who live there strangely pretend that it is.
He now lives in the not-at-all-cold Los Angeles, despite being the sort of person who thought he would never, ever live in Los Angeles. Life is funny that way.
Review: This is one of those books that you don;t want to end! I don;t want to spoil the ending, but the author keeps you wondering about what the final outcome will actually be and it is very unexpected! I loved it! I have been a mystery fan since I was a child, my mother educated me on Poe (don't make have to explain, who? !!) and Sherlock Holmes. Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie came next. So I had a great interest in this book. There was just the right amount of historical truth mixed in with fiction to enliven the book. This is one of those books that you hope will NOT be made into a movie, as like The Time Traveler's Wife, you know it won;t transcribe right to film.
If you need a great gift for Christmas, this is THE book for the mystery lovers among your shopping list!
