MY BLOG SPARK CHALLENGE FROM
   SEVENTH GENERATION!

I was sent a bottle of Seventh Generation Detergent and Liquid Softener for review, along with a Black Light.

A black light you ask? I'll get to that, but first let's talk about the Detergent itself.

seventh generation products
Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergents are both hypo-allergenic and biodegradable, so they are great for families with sensitive skin, plus they help you make a better decision for your family and the environment.

I was sent two shirts to conduct my tests/review on- they are your basic cotton t-shirts in ivory. being a true test, I figured I'd start with stain removal, as all parents know this is the bane of our existence, right?

So a sample stain of maple syrup, coffee and a little peanut butter. You know, typical breakfast fare!  Here's one of the shirts BEFORE washing. I duplicated the stains, so they were equal on both!

And now to the first contender- I had a sample of the new Tide come in the mail on the same day the Seventh Generation pack arrived, so waa-la, it got chosen for the competition! You can see that all the stains came out and the shirt looks great.

And now for the Seventh Generation detergent shirt. Again, all the stains came out equally as well as the Tide! I also liked that there was no heavy smell on the shirt- it smelled CLEAN.

And then for the aforementioned black light test!

Did you know that the laundry detergent you may be using could contain little-known
chemicals called optical brighteners?

According to scientific research, these can cause allergic reactions, are toxic to small fish and other aquatic life, and can pollute your waterways. When ultraviolet light hits optical brighteners coating your clothing, the brighteners convert UV rays into visible light to create an optical illusion. (AHA- now you see where we're going with the black light!) This tricks the eye into thinking the clothing is whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner than it really is.

When washed in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners, clothes appear to glow under a black light.
I forgot to put the markers down and then to go back and retake the pix (been ONE of those weeks). But the Tide shirt is on the left, while the Seventh Generation is on the right (the white sheet peeking out from underneath them was washed in a different sample detergent-Gain)

As you can see, the Seventh Generation, doesn't GLOW, it's evenly solid in color. The Tide shirt on the other hand, is a glowing away. Now admittedly, the Tide shirt is not as bad as other brands I have seen from other blog postings! But still= ewwww!

seventh generation infoSo how can you avoid these optical brighteners? Seventh Generation makes it easy because their laundry detergents are not only free of optical brighteners, but they’re also non-toxic . I LOVE their frabric softener- it has a clean clean smell, not a perfumey one. AND you use alot less per load-yeah! It kept our clothes soft and free of static lean. LOVE IT! The dryer sheets were also wonderful and I would definitely buy all the products again!
