With all the SNOW coming down South this past week, when I saw this info in my email inbox, I wanted to pass it on!
"Contrary to popular belief and what has been posted, it does NOT have to be freezing, or below, at the surface to snow, since the temperatures are below freezing through out most of the atmosphere where the precipitation (snow) formed.
Usually, the temperature has to be 37 degrees or colder at the onset of snow, in which, the snow will fall, but melt on contact. Temperatures where we live, under conditions such as evaporative cooling take place can be as warm as the low 40's.
Obviously, it has to be below freezing up in the clouds, meaning below 32 degrees. Now, in very rare instances in very dry places, it has been as warm as 45 degrees with snow in high elevations of the west, when it snowed on the ground."
So there you have it! Now you can sound like the smart weatherman when somebody says it wasn't cold enough to snow and it did! You're welcome- LOL!
