When it comes to mysteries, I find that I tend to like finding new series on the Sophomore books. Why you ask?
Because usually the author has found their character(s) voice(s), they are more comfortable in their writing (especially if the first book of the series WAS their first book published) and the 2nd book has a better flow to it, normally. Plus I like the adventure of going back and catching up!
Today's book is another book that I caught in the second of the series!
Synopsis: The book features the return of Super in the City's Zephyr Zuckerman, a New York City junior investigator. In this book she goes undercover in a boutique hotel in Greenwich Village Hotel, in order to track down a possible embezzler for the family run hotel. She and her former NYPD boyfriend have split up over a disagreement about reproducing (he wants kids, she doesn’t), and she’s trying to readjust to single life, and same building living, meaning well but intrusive, parents. Add to the mix her old friends, one who’s having a suburban motherhood/marriage meltdown and another who’s having a crisis of wedding planner clients dying on their honeymoons, and you have a crazy plot that keeps your interest.
Review: The book has alot of characters but the author never looses site of them and what seems like a loose tangent comes back later in the story and completes another tangent, and tying into the plot line! This is a good old-fashioned summer read and I am looking forward to getting the first book in the series and catching up on it (and what appears to be the next one coming soon!) . In many ways it reminded me of Sex and the CIty, as far as the friendships went. If you like chick lit and mysteries, you'll love this book!
About the Author: Daphne is a former Books/Poetry editor at Time Out New York, as well as a writer for The Washington Post, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Oxygen, Allure, and Self, among others. A third-generation West Villager, Daphne lives in the Hudson Valley with her husband and two children. Check out her website for more.
