Before Kiddo started Pre-school this year, we considered home-schooling as an option, as my parents are her at home care when we're working. With the cost of private school tuition going up, and local public schools NOT an option, I've amassing some interesting home schooling sites, in case we need them. So I was thrilled to be able to review the The Bogart Family Resource website and products, as penmanship is one area that doesn't get taught enough in schools to begin with!
I am a HUGE advocate of penmanship. I see numerous BAD examples every day that I work that would make the nuns who taught me cringe and say a few Hail Marys for the people!
It may be old fashioned, but properly readable cursive is seen as more formal than print writing, AND the sign of a more educated person. We all want to give our kids the best, but even in regular schools, they have limited time to teach cursive the way we were taught. So it falls to us, their parents, to fill the void. And that is where Bogart family Resources can fill the void! Their guides are aimed at kids between the ages of 4 and 12.
To start with, I was offered a free download of their excellent e-book, What About Penmanship? A Guide for Homeschooling Parents. The book helps you decide how much to concentrate on penmanship and the different styles to work with. I have found that my cursive has taken on aspects of Calligraphy, as I studied it for years, and the styles merged. Now I find that in this guide, this has happened to others, and a new penmanship, modern cursive has been born! AHA! We were taught using copy work- aka the lined pages and shown what to write over and over. It may have been boring, but it taught the essentials! The Guide includes bible verses, which Kiddo has already learned at school, so she is comfortable with them. YEAH, half the battle won! Obviously at age 4 we have not started cursive yet, as we are still working with the basics, but the copywork pages have been helpful in her learning sizing of letters and keeping them consistent! This is an excellent guide, and I recommend it for ALL parents!
In fact- YOU can download it for FREE on the Bogart family website for yourself! Woohoo!
Additionally we were allowed to review 3 more books:
The first was Zaner Bloser level 1-A version of All Things Bright and Beautiful Hymnbook.
>
It includes the full text of the classic hymn, as well as related passages of scripture (King James Version) that highlight theme of the hymn. It has the traditional ZB style manuscript, along with l, large 5/8” lines, line-by-line models, p<>ictures to color, as well as Quick Reference Charts for Mom/Dad and blank templates/guidelines for use.
I really like that there are included pictures with the different copywork. It gives your child a break from the montony of copywork, and helps to instill the meaning of the verse. Always a plus!
The second book was Among the Farmyard People. Also level 1A, ZB style.
Written by Clara Dillingham Pierson in 1899, this nature-based title for children introduces young readers to farm-life while teaching through character-building stories and examples.>
it includes all the drills like the previous book, as well as guides as drawings. Kiddo liked this one the best, as she loved farm animals! This one is sure to be a pleaser for years, so I'm thrilled I selected it!
All together, these books provide us, the parents, with excellent materials to help our kids achieve better penmanship and writing skills. In today's competitive world, having writing that is readable for when the computers go down, as they always do at some time, is well worth the time spent learning it! Ranging in price from $2.95 to $4,95, they are well worth their price!
I highly recommend Bogart Family Resources and am thrilled that not only can my readers download the penmanship guide above, but if you join their mailing list, you will receive a $5 coupon , to download any of their copywork titles for free. They also mail out exclusive, free copywork lessons to their members, deep members-only discounts on new titles, and other great savings, so it's a subscription that keeps on giving!
AND one lucky reader will get to choose another download for free!
Contest will end on May 8th, at midnight. Winner will be picked by Random Number (random.org) on May 9th, and emailed. As soon as winners' info is received, I will email their info to Bogart Family Resources, who will email their gift certificate code to them.
