Recipe Weekend/ Cookbook Review: Beat This! by Ann Hodgman

As you know, I am a member of NetGalley and get to review some pretty great books via the net!

Iif you have a LOT of cookbooks like we do, this is a super option, as we can pull the recipes we really want to try and not have ANOTHER book taking up space!

beat this cover
Synopsis: Do you think you have the absolute best recipe for apple pie? Maybe your neighbor claims to make the best meatloaf around. Did your Italian grandmother serve the best spaghetti sauce this side of the Atlantic? Well, unless you or that neighbor or your grandmother is Ann Hodgman, you're wrong!
The book that the editor in chief of Vanity Fair called "the funniest, most engaging book about food I've ever come across" has now been revised and updated: more than half the recipes are completely new, and many of the originals have been "oomphed up" to make them even more shamelessly delicious.

Beat This! Cookbook contains more than a hundred all-time favorites, from Burnt Sugar Ice Cream and White Chocolate Raspberry Pie to Chili-Cheese Casserole and Onion Rings. Each one is guaranteed to make people take a bite, stagger with joy, and beg you for the recipe.

About the Author:
Along with the original Beat This!, ANN HODGMAN is the author of Beat That! and One Bite Won't Kill You. She has written more than forty children's books, including, most recently, How to Die of Embarrassment Every Day. Hodgman has written articles for The New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, the New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic Monthly, Food & Wine, Smithsonian, and just about all of the women's and parenting
magazines.

Review: This was an interesting book and it did have recipes that were either the same or very similiar to those we've had in our family for years. This would be a perfect book for a wedding shower, for the co-ed going off to college, or moving out into their first apartment! The author's introductory stories about each recipe make them personal and her humor remind you of your favorite aunt. I'm sure this will be a well appreciated gift for any recipient!

Here's one of my favorite recipes from the book!

Apple Crisp
Like us, Ann sometimes make this with 4 cups of pears and a big handful of dried cranberries! We like to add the cranberries to the apple version as well!

Ingredients:
4 generous cups Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon mixed with 1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
. cup all-purpose fl our
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
⅛ teaspoon salt
Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream or straight-up heavy cream

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F, with a rack in the middle.
2. Butter a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.
3. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the lemon juice and cinnamon sugar.
In a small bowl, blend the brown sugar, fl our, butter and salt together, first
with a pastry blender or two knives, and then with your hands.
3. Put the apple slices into the loaf pan. Press the topping over them.
4. Bake the apple crisp for 1 hour.
5. Serve the apple crisp warm or cold with the ice cream or cream.

Comments

  1. I love cookbooks. My sister and I collect different kinds and if we ever need a certain kind of recipe one of us has it, generally. She actually is in the midst of getting a cookbook published. She's using the proceeds to help a friend we grew up with who has fallen on hard times. Anyway, I love that the author of this cookbook put humor in it.

It sounds like something I might purchase for my niece when she leaves for college soon! That way she'll think of me and her "Crazy Aunt Kimmie" (yep that's my nickname) every time she opens it.

Thanks for bringing such great products to your blog!
