A recent nationwide survey commissioned by The National WWII Museum found that 80 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with Memorial Day’s real meaning.
That means that for 4 out of 5 Americans, Memorial Day is more about barbecues, baseball and the start of summer than it is about honoring the sacrifice of those who died in military service to America. I really can't think of any more disheartening than that!
As a supporter of the WW II Museum, and daughter of a Navy/AF Veteran, I understand, and appreciate, the service and sacrifice of our military heroes and all they do to defend the cherished ideals of liberty and freedom.
That’s why we hope you will help us educate other Americans on Memorial Day’s importance by spreading the word about the WWII Museum's newest initiative — MyMemorialDay.org.
This new website, MyMemorialDay.org, provides an overview of Memorial Day, and why it is so important and offers 10 suggestions for how to commemorate this solemn holiday. Some of the suggestions include: thanking a veteran, writing a letter to the editor about the importance of Memorial Day, placing a flag on a veteran’s grave and organizing a community observance.
Together we can increase awareness of Memorial Day so that more Americans will realize someone paid the ultimate price for the precious freedoms we enjoy today.
