If you’re a parent with a kid online, you probably have this dilemma: How do I keep my child safe from predators and bullies – without taking away their independence or fun-time with friends?
A pedophile posing as a teen could exploit their innocence and too much freedom to draw them into a relationship, like the plot of David Schwimmer’s new film, Trust. On the other hand, you want your child to have fun, and restrictions don’t always work and sometimes provoke rebellion.
With National Cyber Safety Awareness Day TOMORROW, May 17th, I thought you would appreciate hearing about a new, free service that just launced – one that can keep your kids safe online, without smothering them.
United Parents (www.unitedparents.com) is a free software download that runs in the background of your home’s computers. Parents don’t see their child’s Facebook messages or I.M.’s – nor will anyone else. But at the first sign of trouble – if they begin talking about suicide or drugs, or begin an online relationship with someone whose registered details elsewhere on the web reveal them to be an adult – a computer algorithm sends parents an alert. Parents can then initiate a dialogue with their children offline, making sure they stay safe.
