Smile Pretty: Find the Perfect Outfit for Your Family Portrait

It’s always a good time for a new family photo-- especially if you haven’t had one recently. Take some time and choose something special for the occasion that will serve your memories well for years to come: Choose coordinating outfits for the family. Invite extended family, too, if you like – this is one of those fun ideas that shouts, “the more the merrier.” (Course if you live in the South you KNOW, you need to have a Summer Beach family portrait every year too- it's tradition!)

Some of you are wondering if matching outfits for parents and kids isn’t a bit over the top. The answer is absolutely not. Matching doesn’t mean identical. It simply means complementary. Choose a motif, choose a few base colors, or choose a style – and then do a little shopping. Every member of the family who will grace your picture should have a new piece of clothing that reflects your theme. Keep it simple or choose something fantastic that represents your family’s character. If you love the water, choose sailing attire. If you spend lots of time cheering for your favorite team, choose the game day gear you love. (for the traditional Summer Beach portraits Dad may have a white oxford shirt on with sleeves rolled up, Mom with a nice white blouse, daughter is a billowy white dress and son in a shirt similar to Dad's. Everybody in white or khaki pants and you're all set! )

Some great photo memories can be made with a little thought and consideration to what you’ll wear (something you likely do anyway). Photographers will tell you that consistency is a good thing… so whether family members are both dressed in pretty pastel polos, are sporting stars and stripes, or choose base hues of a charismatic deep green along with navy and white, the consistency of the motif or colors will help tie the elements of your photo together and create a more beautiful image.
