Up today, we have a WONDERFUL children's story that helps children deal with recent events in Louisiana written by a VERY lovely lady! We were blessed to have met Lynda at a book fair held at the Audubon Zoo this year and she was just as charming as her books are! She took the time to talk to Kiddo about the oil spill and Kiddo's fascination with the sea turtles and how they were cleaned up at the aquarium.
Kiddo was fascinated with the oil spill when it happened and became a staunch supporter of the sea turtles and the pelicans, who were affected. It is amazing to me how the Audubon outreach programs helped educate even the smallest of children, about how the spill affected the wildlife and the environment during and after the spill. So I was quite happy to review Lynda's book and share it with you!

Review: I thought this book might be above Kiddo's understanding, as it is really aimed more at kids age 6-8, but she was fascinated with the story and the beautiful illustrations, and at EACH page we had lengthy discussions about what was going on in the story (seriously, I think it took us an hour to read it the first time!). To me, that is the best thing a children's book can do- make a child THINK about the situation being presented and inspire discussion with their parents! You KNOW your kids are truly comprehending what they are reading- WOO HOO!
This book is a wonderful way of approaching the topics of respecting the environment-the land AND all the animals (ok, so maybe NOT the swamp mosquito- him we can kill....LOL). The book really brought home to Kiddo how the animals lost their homes, some temporarily, others permanently. In fact, it fostered a "I love MY house" mantra for about 2 weeks after the first week, as she realized how important HOME can be!
Kiddo was also entranced with the “Salty Seas Toot Toot” song that came on a cd with the book. She sings it to her star turtle sometimes at night! Pretty appropriate!
The book is a wonderful testament to the commitment of the people and organizations, who rushed to aid those affected in the communities along the Gulf of Mexico by the spill, and to the culture of Louisiana that was affected by it as well. I HIGHLY recommend this book, as well as the author's previous book with the same characters! Now here's a clip of Lynda from one of her presentations.
About the Author: Lynda has been performing for audiences since she was three. This multi-talented singer/writer brings to life many Louisiana traditions in her children’s books. As a seasoned communicator with women’s groups, she exudes enthusiasm in every presentation.
