Guest Post: Tips For Encouraging Your Kindergartner Not To Give Up On Difficult Task

Have you ever seen your little one struggle through a task?

Sometimes it’s heartbreaking to watch, especially if they want to give up just after a couple of attempts. Skills like tying shoes, zipping a zipper, buttoning or cutting with scissors to writing their name, learning sounds, reading sight words or adding can all be difficult for any child.

Encouragement is key! If it seems like your child is ready to throw in the towel a bit early here are a few motivational tips to try.

• Build character - tell him “Yes you can”. When he insists “no I can’t”, repeat “yes you can, with practice you will get better”. Show your child how to do the task with excitement and allow him to try again.
• Make learning fun - Turn work into play. Kids are naturally curious, making it easy to learn. Before your child realizes he will be able to zip his own coat, write his name or read all his sight words.
• Demonstrate interest - If you show interest in what your child is learning, she will intern show interest in learning.
• Use verbal recognition - So many parents get caught up in a reward system. Your child will appreciate your words of love and encouragement more than a toy they will soon forget about.
• Allow plenty of time - when working allow your child plenty of time for persistence. Your child needs a quiet place to do homework without interruption. Show your child you believe in them by letting them complete the task alone. Be nearby just in case there are questions.
• Set reachable goals - Setting reachable goals for your child allows your child to progress and focus on what they are learning opposed to stressing them out and making them want to give up.

Use these tips to motivate and encourage your child to achieve tasks that once were difficult and seemed impossible.
