Book Review: Wanna Get Lucky? by Deborah Coonts

Photobucket

I have FOUND the literary character I want to be in real life. PERIOD. And her name is Lucky!

If there EVER was a more sarcastic and FUNNY heroine, I have NOT found one! I thought the Spellman family, especially Isabel (from Lisa Lutz's series) fit the bill. But then I met Lucky. Nope. Her sarcasm is mine. To a tee. Ok, so her family has 'issues', but truly she is a super duper 'I want to be her' character and you are going to LOVE this series! Read on!

AND FYI- This first book in the 'Lucky' series, Wanna Get Lucky?, has been nominated by the Romance Writers of America for the 2011 RITA awards in the categories of Best First Novel, and Best Novel with a Strong Romantic Element. Her second book, Lucky Stiff, was published in February 2011, and we will have a review AND giveaway for BOTH books on Sunday, here on this blog!

wanna get lucky cover
SynopsisA young woman plunges from a Las Vegas sightseeing helicopter, landing in the Pirate's lagoon in front of the Treasure Island Hotel in the middle of the 8:30 Pirate Show.  Almost everyone writes her off as another Vegas victim.

But Lucky O'Toole smells a rat.  She's head of Customer Relations at The Babylon, the newest, most opulent mega-casino and resort on the Strip, so she's got a lot on her plate: the Adult Film industry's annual awards banquet, a spouse-swapping convention, sex toy purveyors preying on the pocket-protector crowd attending ElectroniCon....  Still, Lucky can't resist turning over a few stones.
When a former flame is one of the snakes she uncovers, Lucky's certain she's no longer dealing with an anonymous Sin City suicide.  To top it all off, Lucky's best friend Teddie--Las Vegas' finest female impersonator--presses to take their relationship to the next level.  Leave it to Lucky to attract a man who looks better in a dress than she does.
Lucky must manage the Babylon's onslaught of outrageous festivities, solve a murder, and struggle to keep her life and libido from spinning out of control... not to mention keep her balance in six inch heels.

You can read an excerpt on author's webpage, plus a post on inspiration BEHIND the story!

About the Author : Deborah Coonts, author of Lucky Stiff, says her mother tells her she was born in Texas a very long time ago, though she's not totally sure -- her mother can't be trusted. But she was definitely raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food and beer. She currently resides in Las Vegas, where family and friends tell her she can't get into too much trouble. Silly people. Coonts has built her own business, practiced law, flown airplanes, written a humor column for a national magazine, and survived a teenager. She is the author of Wanna Get Lucky?, the first in a series of Lucky O'Toole Vegas adventures.

Review: Ok, so if you read about Deborah above, or clicked over to read her inspiration post about this book, you KNOW Lucky's sarcastic wit, is pretty much Deborah. Maybe it's because she's from Texas, and she's got that frontier Southern thing going, but she is hilarious and her easy manner with dialogue lends itself 100% to this series and this book! I swear I laughed and smiled my way through the ENTIRE book.

To say this was a quick read is an understatement! I sailed thru it in 2 nights, only because I was so tired the first night, otherwise, I swear I would have read it in one night! OH yeah! The dialogue is what moved the story- it SO reminds me of a West coast version of the Gilmore Girls- the smart and witty fast paced dialogue moved the story along. Coonts really gets the old Vegas versus new Vegas and the convergence of tourist and people who live there and the odd situations that can pop up!

The back story really fleshes out the mystery and Coonts does an excellent job of setting up characters for the second book, without you realising that is what she is doing, In a way I was glad I read backwards and read book 2, then this book. I liked seeing the set up and how the characters came together- sorta like a prequel!

if you want the ultimate Summer read, it this Lucky series! Neither book disappoints, and you will finish either one wanting to go to Vegas and/or call up Coonts and beg her to be you BFF, cause she is numero uno writer in your book! Ok, so I am NOT telling you to STALK her...just leave her some great fan emails or Facebook postings....ok, so maybe it's a little stalkerish...but she wrote the books I wish I could have, so there! LOL Seriously- no stalking....she might get the old squad from Vegas after you....
