One of the things I appreciate most about warm weather is the access it allows to the super-sized canvases that are driveways. My daughters and their friends love to make colorful chalk creations all across the pavement…and then to re-make new ones after a pavement-cleansing rain. Last year, a neighbor shared with me this easy recipe for sidewalk paint, a fun alternative to chalk that allows for eye-popping driveway decorating:  Materials:

  • Equal parts cornstarch and cold water. I use ½ cup of each for a typical batch of “paint.”
  • Food coloring
  • Old paintbrushes
Instructions:
  1. In a bowl, combine the cornstarch and water. Stir until mixed.
  2. Add as many drops of food coloring as desired to achieve your color. Kids love to get in on this part of the action!
  3. Repeat this for each new color of paint you want to create.
  4. Give kids old paintbrushes and let them go to work painting driveways, garden rocks, and sidewalks. The color is incredible.
  5. Mess? Don’t worry. This paint washes away with a simple spray of the hose—which is also great for cooling kids off after a long painting session!
