has god spoken coverToday's book is one that I read in one sitting, during my father in law's surgery this week!

Synopsis: Compelling evidence that the Bible is God's Holy Word.

Using the memorable acronym MAPS, radio host and Bible scholar Hank Hanegraaff masterfully reveals four proofs that confirm the divine origin of the Bible.
  • represents the strength of the manuscript itself as many actual fragments have been located
  • A stands for the archaeological proofs that have been uncovered
  • P is for the prophecy that has accurately predicted events
  • S represents the scriptural synergy found in the unity, consistency, and harmony of the sixty-six books
These clearly presented proofs provide powerful indicators that confirm the trustworthiness and divine nature of Scripture, that God has indeed spoken, and that the Bible is the reliable repository of His words.

Review: When I saw the synopsis for this book, I was intriqued and wanted to read it, so I selected it. As I started to read it I was impressed with the concept of the layout- the MAPS above that breaks down into:
1. Manuscript C-O-P-I-E-S: Copyist Practices, Oral Culture, Papyrus and Parchment, Internal Evidence, External Evidence, Science of Textual Criticism

2. Archeologist S-P-A-D-E: Steles and Stones, Pools and Fools, Assyrian Archaeology, Dead Sea Scrolls, Epic of Gilgamesh
3. Prophetic S-T-A-R-S: Succession of Nations, Typological Prophecy, Abomination of Desolation; Resurrection, Superstar ABCs
4. Scriptural L-I-G-H-T-S: Literal Principle, Illumination Principle, Grammatical Principle, Historical Principle, Typology Principle, Synergy Principle

So it seemed like a great start to be a thorough analysis and critique. And I got thru the first chapter and thought, ok, he's using Bart D. Ehrman as an example, and is moving on to other authors? And then I realized that was NOT going to be the case. In fact this book should be titled, WHY Bart D. Ehrman is Wrong!  EVERY chapter is devoted to disproving Ehrman's theories and articles about Christianity.

Now don't get me wrong, the author has good supporting evidence for his responses, but after 4 chapters you really get tired of it all being against Ehrman. I wish he had brought in OTHER authors to dispute or discuss as well. It would have made a more thorough and free standing book. As it was, by chapter 5 I was loosing interest, due to the personal tirade against Ehrman. I'm not saying Ehrman is wrong or right, I just think if your WHOLE book is going to be about debunking him, then SAY SO up front- like on the title.

Now again, the research is very good (especially on showing why the gospels have different info, but are telling the same story in pieces, or showing how old testament places DO exist), and if you skip over the tirade against Ehrman, you can learn some interesting facts and knowledge about Christianity and the bible. If you are a bible or theological scholar, then this book may be a great reference for you, if you strictly use the info provided. Which is why I think there is someone else out there who can really use this book.
