Book Review: The Santa Club by Kelly Moss, Illus. by Jim Keserich

I saw a cute sign in a catalog today (yup, the annual onslaught of catalogs with Christmas items has started-be forewarned, your mailbox is about to get REALLY heavy!)- it said, "when you stop believing in Santa Claus, you get underwear". Ok, so raise your hands, if that totally rang a memory with you! You know it did! HA HA!

So I was quite happy to review this little book called The Santa Club!

the santa club coverSynopsis: The Santa Club transitions your child from receiving gifts to experiencing the joy of giving.  With sensitivity, faith, and love, The Santa Club tackles the serious question, “Is Santa Claus Real?”  To be read with your child, this wonderful book not only answers that sometimes “dreaded” question but it also addresses the questions of why Santa comes at Christmas and who was the first Santa.  The Santa Club is a wonderful parenting resource and a stunning children’s book, and is sure to become an annual family favorite.

About the Author: Kelly Moss is the CEO of JoeBro Records and JonJam Productions, small independent entertainment based companies located in Henderson, NV. When not working she donates her time speaking to or helping young artists navigate the entertainment industry without getting swindled. This is her first book. Kelly has three children, two sons who are professional actors in Los Angeles and a lovely daughter who was adopted from Kazakhstan at the age of fourteen. Kelly is in the process of writing her second book on how to be a Stageparent your children can be proud of.

About the Illustrator: Jim is the owner of Taylor-Made Graphics. As well as illustration and design, he does airbrush illustrations on hockey masks, motorcycles, guitars and even duck models! He has also been a Goaltending instructor for several seasons coaching AAA hockey with the Cleveland Barons,Cleveland Jr Jacks, and also for several different teams and programs in the Cleveland area.

Review:  I loved that on page one, the recipient child is asked to make an oath to not read the book without an adult/parent/guardian and that they will NOT ell another child about what is in the book, and will keep the secret. Thus protecting younger siblings from finding out the truth too soon! Very cute and a way to peak kids' interest! The book treats 'Santa Claus' as a special club that welcomes those who ask.

As Christians, I was very happy to see the author start with the story of St. Nicholas and segue way into Jesus and God's love for us by sending Jesus to us and giving us the ultimate gift. Yes, you CAN combine both without being too secular! She explains this is how St Nicholas got started, by following God's example of giving. And this tradition is what the members of the Santa Club continue.

The author then provides a 'certificate' for membership and responsibilities for new members. There's even a place to add your child's photo! This is a very sweet book and one I know I will use when the time comes for Kiddo. I think it is a wonderful way to bring the true meaning of why we continue the Santa tradition to our kids and bring the joy of giving to them! It would be a great idea to have your child and their friends form a 'local club' and give to members of their community and have their own outreach program of the Santa Club!

I very very highly recommend this book to all parents to have on hand for when the time comes for underwear to make it into your kids' stockings! And under $12, it's a steal with it's great illustrations!
