As you know, we really love the educational videos from Rock ‘N Learn! They have everything you need for your kids from preschool onto high school! And they are FUN, not stuffy and boring! So I was thrilled to be able to review another of their wonderful titles!
Synopsis: Sight Words, a new DVD program from Rock ‘N Learn, helps kids learn to read. Using fun music and exciting characters, kids learn to read over 60 words. These are the most common words used in the English language, and are words kids need to know automatically. This program is perfect for parents with very young kids who appear advanced and eager to learn, as well as older students with remedial needs. Developed along with four reading specialists having combined classroom experience of over 50 years, Rock ‘N Learn Sight Words is designed to hold the interest of kids and get results.
Review: Like the other Rock N Learn videos, this one has a couple of primary characters, and their friends, who use music to learn. If you have a child like Kiddo, who adores music, then these videos are super at keeping their attention and helping them to learn. Kiddo's preschool class is working on vowel sounds as part of their pre-reading exercises and she is starting to want to learn to spell words, so the timing of receiving this video was perfect!
As you can see from the sample clip above, the words are simple and Kiddo was singing along from the beginning! I watched it with her the first couple of times, to work with her and see if it was over her head or not. I was pretty surprised at how well she paid attention and recognized her vowel sounds and letter patterns! Kiddo loved the "look, see, find" song and danced along, using her toys as props. It was quite cute! I even caught her singing the "up" and "down" song a few hours later!
Here's a sample list of some of the words on the video:
As you can see, there are simple ones, and more complex ones. When reading books a few days later, Kiddo was able to point out words and know what they meant, so I was really impressed at how much had stayed with her! Now watching all 50 minutes is a little much for her (she's 4), but she likes to watch about 15-20 minutes and then move on, which I think is enough as well. The first part of the video is geared more toward her age/level, and the second part is for kids who have mastered the first words/are a little older. There is also a bonus section to help older kids practice their spelling skills, which was too much for her, but would be great for practice. She did like the bonus section that focused on the shapes of words, and didn't do too bad with it.
I was quite happy with Kiddo's response and her wanting to watch the video again and again. Because it is FUN, she see's it like her other videos, not as a boring educational video. And I like that it is technically above her level, as it encourages her to do more and learn more- always a plus! We highly recommend this video to all early readers!
