DVD Review and Giveaway: The Shunning, a Hallmark Movie based on "The Heritage of Lancaster County" by Beverly Lewis
** this giveaway is closed **
Propeller PR has offered us some really great movies and cds to review lately, so I was very happy to accept their latest DVD to review, The Shunning. All things Amish keep popping up the last few weeks- coincidentally -so it seemed like a HUGE sign to go ahead and review, and boy am I glad I did!
Synopsis: Before she succumbs to cancer, the dying wish of Laura Mayfield-Bennett is to be reunited with the daughter she never knew. Unfortunately, that daughter, Katie Lapp, is a member of the Amish order. Katie is about to be married, but uneasy about the path ahead. Now she discovers the secret her parents have kept from her: she's adopted.
Based on the celebrated first novel of the best-selling "The Heritage of Lancaster County" book series from Beverly Lewis, this movie stars Danielle Panabaker and Sherry Stringfield.
About Beverly Lewis: Born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is The New York Times bestselling author of more than eighty books. Her stories have been published in eleven languages worldwide. A keen interest in her mother's Plain heritage has inspired Lewis to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with the one this movie is based on, which has sold more than one million copies. In 2007, Lewis' "The Brethren" was honored with a Christy Award. Lewis lives with her husband, David, in Colorado. Visit her Web site at www.beverlylewis.com for more information
Review: This is a wonderful movie that should be watched by all mothers and daughters- because at it's heart it is about the love a mother has for her child. As every mother of an adopted child will tell you, the "greatest gift a mom can give is to put her child's needs above hers", and give her child to a family to raise, when she can not. And yes, as this is a Hallmark Movie- have the box of Kleenex handy!
Adoption not a typical Amish occurrence, so in the movie there is even more secrecy involved in not telling Katie. Katie has her own secrets that refuse to stay down as she is basically led by her family to marry a widowed man with 2 sons. She deal with her conflicting emotions in a way that any 20 year old would. And while her community may shun her, her parents are her still her parents and love her and support her in their own ways.
This movie will keep you spellbound and it was a shock to realize it was over. I had incorrectly assumed it would include more than just the one book. I hope this means that they are going to film more movies with the same story continued (as it does in The Confession and The Reckoning, both of which I now want to read, to see what happens to Katie.). Danielle Panabaker (you will recognize her from numerous TV show guest spots and movies, like Yours, Mine and Ours), does an excellent job in portraying Katie and her confusion. I highly recommend it and am thrilled we have another copy to offer to a lucky reader!
