Not everyone can afford to send their kids to a Christian School, or attend a church that has enough kids for an actual Sunday School class, so you might feel adrift on this topic! Read on for some great tips that really could apply to ANY religion!
I grew up in a Christian home. My parents took me to church, taught me to pray and read my Bible. They taught me to love God. They lead by example what it meant to be a Christian. Our family was not perfect, but whose is? I really did not understand what a difficult job they had until I had kids of my own. Now I wonder how did they know all that stuff? (hindsight really makes our moms look like Superheroes doesn't it?)
There is definitely not a class on parenting and teaching your kids (if there was we'd all sign up and would take every class they had!). I did not receive a manual at the hospital that said, “Congratulations! Parenting 101”. We took our baby home and I wondered how I would care for this little baby.
It’s easy when they are little because they lean on every word you say. They trust that you are right and will always make the best choice for them. (aka, the good old days)
As they get older and are influenced by the world, things get a little sticky and more difficult. Some of their friends do not go to church. Some friends are aloud to watch movies we consider inappropriate. The cool kids are not always the good kids. As a matter of fact the good kids are considered weird and totally uncool.
GUARD YOUR CHILD’S HEART and MIND
- Set the example at home. Live out your faith at home. Do not hide from your kids, be open about your love for Christ. Your kids will notice how often you open your Bible or pray. Actions are louder than word in some cases. Set the bar high!
This starts when they are YOUNG, yes it may seem like you are 'setting a habit', but so was learning their abc's and learning to count!
- Pray for your kids and with your kids everyday!
I am constantly amazed at how our daughter at 4 can see what needs to be prayed for quicker than any adult can. Prayer is a form of compassion- it needs to encouraged and supported!
- Encourage them to be involved in a Bible club at school, to carry their Bible to school, pray at lunch time.
- Talk openly about God and what He is doing in your life. Ask your kids how God is working in their life. Share your faith with your kids!
This may be hard for adults- kids are much more open. If you need to, download some talking points and bring them up at the dinner table!
- Keep the communication doors wide open. There are so many temptations lurking around every corner. (drugs, alcohol, sex)
- Encourage your kids to be involved in the children or youth group at church.
- As a family put on the Armor of God everyday.
These are just a few of my own ideas for raising Godly kids. It is tough to be a Christian and stand up for your faith in this world. Others will ridicule and point out every wrong choice your child makes. Encourage and pray for your children as they are growing up in this harsh world.
