Book Review: The Warrior Sheep Go West by Christine and Christopher Russell

Fall 2011 button

It's hard to find a decent story book aimed at older kids (9-12), that is not only funny, but teaches a lesson or two, that more importantly kids will WANT to read! Our entry today is one that they will LOVE!

The Warrior Sheep Go West coverSynopsis: In The Warrior Sheep Go West, the follow up to the critically acclaimed sleeper hit The Quest of the Warrior Sheep, by Christine and Christopher Russell, the courageous and loveable ovine heroes are back for another sheep-tastic adventure with, if possible, even more hilarious fun than before. The “Eppingham Posse” of Oxo, Links, Jaycey, Wills, and Sal hoof it to Las Vegas for a new epic mission. This time, it is the entirety of sheepdom that hangs in the balance, and it will take their combined fleecy genius to outwit the monster named Red Tongue (evading in the process a mad scientist, joyriding teenagers, a flash flood, a sword-wielding magician, and a menacing bear) and save the, ahem, eweniverse.

About the Authors: "Christopher has been writing since he could hold a pencil. But nobody paid him then. After many years of writing for television - he's quite ancient - he decided to have a go at writing books too. He wrote four adventure stories for children, all with an historical background.Christine had helped with ideas and editing. (that means she told Christopher when she thought he'd written something brilliant or when she thought he'd written a load of old rubbish). But then she got the idea for THE QUEST OF THE WARRIOR SHEEP and thought it would be fun to actually write it together. This is the second book of the series, with a third to come!"

Review: This is one of those books that kids will roll their eyes at at first, then they'll read a chapter, and suddenly they'll be gone. Then like magic, you'll hear them giggling and laughing from the secret corner where they are quietly (ok, not so quietly) reading the book! Then later be prepared to hear ALL about it! I condensed some of the story for Kiddo and she was entranced at the funny personalities of the sheep and their antics!

Anyone who has driven across country will be able to relate to the humor ("oh look, another prickly pear cactus. Do you know HOW many there are in Arizona?"), and family humor of the sheep. Kids will love the sheep raps in the story! It is a very cute and nicely told story, and I would highly recommend putting both books on your kids Christmas lists!
