Christmas Books for Kids: Dusk, God's Chosen Donkey written and illustrated by Carolyn Budd-Goertzen
While I am not reviewing this book today, I wanted to share it with you as part of this series, and to help promote it for the authot/illustrator! She is a lovely person and I know you will feel the same about her book!
Synopsis: This inspirational fiction tale brings to life the world of ancient Israel and the love of Joseph and Mary in a magical tale narrated by the humble donkey, Dusk, divinely ordained to help the couple on their journey to Bethlehem, Egypt and beyond.
Inspired by a vivid dream the author walked amongst the personalities who were connected in some way to the Holy Family and the birth of Jesus. DUSK provides a delightfully fanciful view of this ageless story while still placing it in an accurate historical, and cultural perspective, because of the tireless research done by author Budd-Goertzen.
After she woke from her dream, Budd-Goertzen writes that "I felt I had been transported back in time. It was as if I had been in a full Technicolor movie. I fell in love with Mary, Joseph, Jesus and their little donkey, and all of the friends that were a part of their lives. She then began to do extensive research on the customs of ancient Israel and the Jewish people.
At 248 pages, this is more of a book to be read by chapter to children, and discussed. I would recommend it more for kids 7 and up. The chapters are only about 3 pages long, so it is not hard reading!
This book is the first of Budd-Goertzen's trilogy The Donkey Chronicles. Book one, Dusk, covers the period from well before Jesus' birth, and through Jesus and Mary's departure for Cana. Book two, Jubilee (to be released in 2012) follows with the story of their move to Capernaum, and Jesus' meeting and choosing His disciples and it culminates with the Resurrection. Book three begins at Pentecost, and tells the story of the travels of the disciples and the birth of the Church.
About the Author: Carolyn Budd-Goertzen lives in the lower mainland of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, in the city of Surrey. She lives with her husband Peter and her two Lhasa Apso dogs. She has a passion for gardening and has won awards in the past for her gardens. Carolyn is an accomplished artist as well, painting in oil, acrylic and watercolors. Her love for God and for her faith has taken her to study theology at Regent College, Vancouver, B.C. Carolyn is the Mother of two married children, and has five granddaughters. My book is written for 15 to adult audiences but I am hoping, God willing to produce all 3 books in the series in a children's version. I know of teachers who are reading the book to children as young as 7 [grade 2] and they are simply filtering out what is too adult. The children are then doing pictures of the reading of each chapter.

12 - There is a tale in ABODAH ZARAH, page 17A, about a rabbi who visited every harlot in the world, crossing seven rivers to reach the last one, but he was allowed to die in peace because he had not committed the one unforgivable sin, adopting Christianity.

14 - Murdering Christians is the same as killing a wild animal. SANH. 78B and 79A.
