Christmas Books for Kids: Home for Christmas by Jan Brett

I feel like I grew up with Jan Brett!

I was horse crazy, and her Native American and horse prints were exciting when they first came out, and I admit I had them hanging up in my apartment when I was in my 20s still! She is just such a wonderful artist!

We have a couple of other Christmas books by Brett, so I knew this one would be of equal, or better, quality, and I wasn't wrong!

Synopsis: In what is sure to become a perennial favorite, bestselling author Jan Brett weaves the holiday tale of a wild little troll who runs away from home.  With so many chores to be done at home, Rollo tries living with various woodland animals (including an owl family, a mother bear and two rambunctious cubs, some playful river otters, a hungry lynx and a friendly moose family), as fall turns into a cold snowy winter, but he finds out that there is no place like home on Christmas.

Review: I was not disappointed with this book! The illustrations are gorgeous and super detailed!  As you can see from the above sample page, the illustrations are big and cover 2 pages, with insets with characters from the story acting out things going on at the same time as the verse on the pages.

The story is very cute, and teaches a moral story about home being better than we think, and how much we miss it when it's gone. It also teaches the joy in giving and doing for others, in a way that kids can understand! This is a GORGEOUS book, and I highly recommend it for gift giving!
