This book isn't a quiet one!
This book would be great for the holiday vacation time for kids, to keep them occupied, and if at a big family reunion, give them the means for an impromptu musical jam to entertain the adults with! Thus, it's perfect for Christmas!
Synopsis: From Tambourines to Rainsticks to Dandelion Trumpets, Walnut Castanets to Shepherd’s Pipes to an Abundance of Homemade Drums, Here is a Joyful Quirky Assortment of Good Sounds From Found Objects!
Picking up where diminished school music programs are leaving off,Making Music encourages children to see the musical possibilities in everyday objects and shows how to make more than 70 basic rhythm, string, wind, and keyboard instruments. Noted musical educator John Langstaff also includes exciting ideas on how to compose and conduct pieces for homemade instruments — Paper Orchestra, Clock Music, Duet for Zipper and Velcro. Instruments include thimble fingers, a recorder, and a thumb piano.
Review: With over 24 instruments that cane be made from household and garage items, your kids are sure to be kept busy! Many of the instruments will remind you of ones you made as a kid, and the instructions are simple enough that you could use them for Sunday school or regular classes, or vacation bible schools! In fact, this book would be an excellent gift for any teachers on your list!
The instruments can be as quick as placing plastic wrap over a plastic bowl, to more time consuming, like making a wooden tong drum box! Lessons on rhythm and music scales are easily taught using water glasses or even a wire hanger on a string! i loved how they even came up with an orchestrated musical piece using 2 pot covers- knowing your numbers and how to tell time, is all that is needed! There are also lessons in instruments from other countries, making this a good all around lesson book!
