Sometimes you see something on blogs you follow, or on Pinterest that addictive thing we MUST get off of SOMETIME this year, and you hit your forehead and go "Oh duh, why have we NOT been doing that?"
Case in point- This simple and very thoughtful vase of Heart Flowers, from Make and Takes, that each hold an Act of Kindness or Love, for your child to do, every day leading up to Valentine's Day!
Isn't that just the greatest idea, to turn a holiday that pretty much represents just CANDY to young kids, to something meaningful?
I loved the idea and wanted to make it more personal for Kiddo, so I downloaded the black and white hearts (the colored version is shown in the Make and Takes pix), and then explained the project to Kiddo, and then we each took a page and colored them. Ah, the Mom and Kid coloring moment....SIGH
Then we cut out the acts and taped them on the back, using flexible straws as out stems (hopefully they will survive and we can reuse them next year- fingers crossed on that one). The acts include simple items, like saying Thank You to Your Teacher and Making Someone's Bed. (and yes, that's a map if the U.S. for Kiddo's place mat- we got tired of explaining how far away things she saw on tv were- it has been a HUGE help in explaining why we can't get to Disneyland in 2 hours, for example!)
We have them in a cup in the middle of our Mardi Gras decoration on the coffee table, and each day, she takes one out, we read it and she then puts it in another vase. She is SO serious about them- she has to get them before she can get dressed for school/the day, so she has a 'plan' for the day!
Of course this was BEFORE I ended up in a walking cast and confined to downstairs! So alot of the acts of kindness have ended up benefiting me, as Kiddo helps me, and completes her 'mission' of the day! Kiddo has really loved this activity, and I think it is a super thing to do with young kids, to reinforce being nice and helping others!
What about you?
