Book Review: So Damn Lucky by Deborah Coonts

Suzanne and I have pretty much decided that now that we're of a 'certain age', we need to let our inner personalities come out more- consider them a combo of  a bit of Scarlett O'Hara (OK we can be 'dramatic'), some Martha Stewart (we have our decorating/hosting moments), but a whole lot of Stephanie Plum (ok, so we tend to get into situations, but come out ok in the end...from Janet Evovich's series), the resourcefulness of isabel Spellman (thanks Lisa Lutz!) and Lucky O'Toole, from this series (it's her snarky sarcastic wit maily, ok, we'll her love of fast cars and being able to get the job DONE too), all rolled into one. I know scary- roll with it....

Is it freaky to ya'll to, that the older we get, the more she and I not only THINK, but ACT alike?  Really? Frightening to us too! NAH!

But anyhoo, about the BOOK! When contacted about reviewing the latest Lucky book, my reaction was pretty much "DUH", followed by "how quick will it be here?"! We LOVE this series- in fact, I read the book in ONE sitting (right, laying) over the weekend!

So Damn Lucky cover

Synopsis: Lucky O'Toole -- Head of Customer Relations at The Babylon, premier mega-resort on the Vegas Strip -- thinks it's just another night in Las Vegas. But then a magician pulls a disappearing act, right under Lucky's nose. Is it a stunt? Or something worse?
While Lucky chases leads, someone is trying to put her off the scent. As if this wasn't enough to ruin her day, Lucky's relationship with The Big Boss is coming to a head - - past hurts can no longer be denied. Of course, she is already on shaky emotional ground: Teddie, her live-in, has been touring with a young and lovely pop star. Paxton Dane, former coworker and would-be suitor, is still circling, hoping to find a chink in the armor of Lucky's resolve. And then, there's this French chef, who is proving to be too hot to handle . . .

Las Vegas expert Deborah Coonts thrills again with this third installment in her dazzling series focused on casino "fixer" Lucky O'Toole.

About the Author:
Deborah Coonts says her mother tells her she was born in Texas a very long time ago, though she's not totally sure -- her mother can't be trusted. But she was definitely raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food and beer. She currently resides in Las Vegas, where family and friends tell her she can't get into too much trouble. Silly people. Coonts has built her own business, practiced law, flown airplanes, written a humor column for a national magazine, and survived a teenager.

Review: Sorry guys- no giveaway on this one! A new Deborah Coonts book in the mail is akin to Christmas Day for a 5 year old-it's getting passed around and read!

I really have no idea what triggers Deborah to come up with the insanely 'only in Vegas' ideas and somehow made them sound NORMAL (bondage ball, Houdini seance, anyone?), and part of a regular work day for Lucky!  But what grounds the entire series is Lucky- she is the woman we want to be- great job (she gets to drive a Ferrari, hello job perk!), gets to wear designer clothes (no kids with snot, just a foul mouthed parrot), pretty much says the right sarcastic thing at the right moment (don't we all wish we could?), has major family issues (anybody else's mom run a whorehouse?, right, thought not!), meets some really interesting characters (that's putting it lightly) and is never at a loss for available guys. SIGH... yeah you know you could handle it...

Ah if we all only had Lucky's problems...course then there would no series for Deborah to write! LOL And while she may not want to hear this, I hope they DON'T make a movie of the series. Because you KNOW it will NEVER live up to the books, and then when you read the new ones in the series, you forever have the movie star's image in your head. Totally changes how you read the books in just about all cases....Sorry Deborah, I know movie rights are lucrative, but we love Lucky JUST as she is!

So beat the winter doldrums- go get this book and heat up your end of winter! And while you're at it, get all the Lucky books, because after you read one, you'll want to read them all!

BONUS INFO:
A  Lucky novella, e-book! Now available for Kindle for only $1.99!!!

Lucky O’Toole, the vice president of Customer Relations for the Babylon, one of Las Vegas’s most over-the-top strip properties, is seriously regretting booking a reality television show, The Forever Game, in the hotel’s small theater. The four contestant-couples add their own mischief to the incendiary mix normally available in Sin City while competing for a Las Vegas wedding extravaganza. The host of The Forever Game, Trey Gold, appears interested only in keeping the spotlight on himself while the contestants run wild, sampling all Vegas has to offer and threatening to blow the whole show out of the water.

Not only must Lucky keep the couples from killing each other, killing their relationships, or ending up on the front page of the Review-Journal, she has to navigate her own rocky road of love. Teddie, her live-in lover, seems ready to chase a new career as a singer, leaving Vegas . . . and Lucky . . . behind. And the Babylon’s new French chef seems determined to muddy the murky waters of love even further.
