Book Review: My Bonus Mom! by Tami Butcher, Illus. by Feras Nouf

Bonus Mom? The Power in One Word.

What if the word “step” was changed to “bonus?”

That easy and brilliant word change empowers the child of divorce with an entirely different feeling! That word came from Tami Butcher, who offers a perspective from her own experience in her new easy to read children's book, "My Bonus Mom."

Synopsis: This book, geared towards younger children, is based on Tami's own experiences as a child. She captures the emotions children may experience as they deal with divorce and adjust to remarriage. The children work through their feelings of dismay, fear and anger, and grow to love dad's new wife, whom they come to think of as theibonus mom. Twice the attention, twice the love, twice the fun and twice as many birthday presents! What's not to love?

“I loved my stepmom so much, I always felt that calling her a “step” mom did not do her justice. My mom loved her too, and was thankful that she could be there when she could not. I would like to take away that negative term so many movies and fairytales portray."

Review: if you have kids and are getting divorced, this is a great book to get to read with your kids, especially if they are young. Initial attitude can go a LONG way in how your kids and your ex-spouse all get along. Tami does a great job in the book of showing parents who think of their kids feelings, and respect them, but do move on with their lives. Her book gives a very positive spin to the old evil parents scenario, and offers up a great way for kids to look at the situation- as a bonus, an extra, a PLUS! By taking what society tells us is a negative, and showing how it can be great for kids.

If you have friends or family members going through/went through a divorce with kids, get them this book! The kids will thank you!
