Q: Do you weigh the reaction of your audience when you are writing and change anything because of it?
Since the release of this book, I am listening to the fan base and planning my next book around most of their feedback. It is my fans that I am very grateful for and at the very least, I want to take into consideration their feedback and what they would like to see for my next book.
Q: What types of books do you read and how have they influenced your writing?
I read a variation of books; romance, Christian, self-help, nonfiction, thrillers just to name a few genres. I am not certain if they have influenced my writing for this particular book or future books. As mentioned above, I am listening to the feedback/recommendations from fans and writing with them in mind.
Q: How long have you been writing, and how did you get started?
This is my first book; the idea came to me December of 2010; I wanted to share my life and experiences around special need pets and how it was them that taught me so much about myself and life. I began to journal my life, experiences and what I learned during that particular time.
Q: Are there any specific things in your past which influenced (Real Dogs Don’t Whisper)?
Great question! Without a doubt my past influenced my book; from being a child and having a brother with Down’s syndrome to my first dog Gizmo and being diagnosed with a brain tumor to rescuing the four dogs that inspired this book. My past has helped me mold me into the person that I am today; whether it was good or challenging times, I learned from past. Additionally, as I was writing this book, I had quite a few “ah-ah” moments where I didn’t see how the dots were connecting at a given time, writing this and organizing the notes, dots were being to be connected.
Q: Have you ever met any famous authors? If so, how did you react? If not, who would you want to meet?
I have not yet, there is always tomorrow. If I had the chance to meet a famous author, I would like to meet W. Bruce Cameron. He has done a phenomenal job capturing his audience, taking them on a journey that touches all demographics and emotions.
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
Not sure if my talents are hidden or not; I do have a few talents that when I share most are surprised about. One, I ride a motorcycle; to be specific, GSXR-600 (WHO knew? You go girl!) . Another talent, I like to make bracelets, rings, and book markers for funding raising purposes.
Q: Many writers draw inspiration from music. Do you listen to music when you write? What music inspired (Real Dogs Don’t Whisper)?
Spot on! I have to have music, no question about it. I taught aerobic classes for over twenty-eight (28) years, even though I just went into retirement, I still find house music to be my motivational. I know, not the typical answer one would expect; I just find house music to be energetic, upbeat and motivational.

It was at that very moment I realized Carla Mae was not just an angry, aggressive little cuss I taught to play, dance, and cut loose. I saw Carla Mae for the first time, as she really was— a scared puppy who learned to mistrust those around her and who learned self-preservation the only way she knew how — by biting first and asking questions later. She was a frightened little dog who eventually found a greater lesson in letting go and learning to laugh and play and yes, of course—dance. Carla Mae, found unconditional love in our family and along the way, she learned to trust. Anyway, as for Dim-Bulb King, cooler heads prevailed that day and, lucky for him, his human finally dragged him away from us. But I sure learned something about my new sister that day.
Carla Mae turned out to be a competitive little tomboy and fair adversary. We love to play Kibble Attack—a game that involves her patiently planning preemptive Kibble invasions, only to be taken off guard by a MaGoo surprise maneuver, overrun and forever a close second only to
me. She’s quite the copycat as well, often mimicking our moves. I’m not sure if she’s mocking us all, doing the “when in Rome thing”, or a little of both. What I do know is that I have learned to love Carla Mae and Carla Mae has learned to accept love and even try to nudge in on my petting time with the human and even with random human strangers in the house. She is loved and cared for and Carla Mae is no longer afraid... well, maybe a little afraid of King Crazy Dog, but who wouldn’t be? Other than me, of course.

About Kelly Preston
Kelly Preston is, first and foremost, an animal lover. Raised on a ten-acre property in a small town in Pennsylvania, she grew up with horses, rabbits, and – of course – dogs. When she left home after college, she acquired Gizmo, an irresistible Lhasa Apso that started her on a journey full of joys and sorrows, hopes and tribulations, frustrations, endless lessons in patience, and above all else, love. All of this has come at the hands (more precisely the paws) of Gizmo, Betty Boop, Buffy, Carla Mae, and the inimitable Mr. MaGoo.
Mr. MaGoo is a nine-year-old Lhasa Apso and the book’s co-creator and co-writer. He is, in his own words, “the alpha and omega of all dogs – in the cutest and sparkiest, most fun-loving package ever.” Ignoring Kelly’s persistent eye-rolling, Mr. MaGoo has forged ahead with this project in an attempt to, as he puts it, “present the facts from a dog’s perspective. In other words, the correct, most accurate, most interesting, only-one-that-matters perspective,” to which he adds, simply, “Woof!”
