Review: This cookbook is a really good general cookbook, and one that I would highly recommend as a wedding or housewarming present! It is a very well rounded cookbook! Many of the recipes are ones that are very similar to our family recipes (as grandma was a Yankee! LOL). Some of them are not what you think of when you think Amish food (Steak Fajitas for example) , and other that you do (like Sour Cream Cookies). I like the book being spiral bound, as that way it can lay flat on the counter, or up against something while you are cooking! The Amish humor and comments on the sides of the book are funny and heartening ("we don't realize how wonderful today is until tomorrow"). We highly recommend the cookbook! Here is a recipe from the book that is perfect to take to a pot luck, and one that we have used for years!

Slow Cooked Coffee Roast

ingredients:
1 boneless beef sirloin tip roast (2-1/2 pounds), cut in half
2 tsp canola oil
1-1/2 cps sliced fresh mushrooms
1/3 cp sliced green onions
2 garlic cloves, minced
1-1/2 cps day old brewed coffee
1 tsp liquid smoke
1/2 tspn salt
1/2 tspn chili powder
1/4 tspn pepper
1/4 cp cornstarch
1/3 cp cold water

Instructions:

1. In a large nonstick skillet, brown roast on all sides in oil over medium-high heat.
2. Place in a 5-qt. slow cooker.
3. In the same skillet, saute mushrooms, onions and garlic until tender. Stir in the coffee, liquid smoke, salt, chili powder and pepper. Pour over roast.
4. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until meat is tender.
5. Remove roast and keep warm. Pour cooking juices into a 2-cup measuring cup; skim fat.
6. In a small saucepan, combine cornstarch and water until smooth. Gradually stir in 2 cups cooking juices. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.
7. Serve with beef. Yield6 servings.
