Review: And Alex hits another one out of the ballpark!
I love Alex's books mainly because they have great women characters, dialogue and feature NOLA. But there are times when I wonder when her fountain of great writing will stop- seriously she can turn out some great books with amazing speed! It's not unusual for her to have 3 books out in ONE year! Which makes me want to ask the question of "DO you every sleep Alex?" LOL
I also wonder how she keeps up with her overlapping characters- it is great for her frequent readers, but she must have a huge genealogical type white board up in her house with all the characters, so she can find new ways to overlap them! Which of course is 'simply NOLA'- it's not 6 degrees of separation down here, it's more like 3! I probably liked this book the best of all of hers, as it centered around my old stomping grounds from high school.
After finishing this book (ine one sitting, like all of Alex's books, it;s addicting-you can't put it down), I thought about the book and how it really it a reality fairy tale for grownups. It picks up after the fairy tale we tell kids- after years of marriage and kids. What happens to a relationship when status quo is upset, and is no longer good enough. Can you base a marriage on 'ok' and make it great, or is it a recipe for disaster down the line?
Alex uses her characters' backgrounds to show how we are shaped by our perceptions and of those close to us. How when you topple the house of cards, you can find the truth beneath it, and suddenly realize things are NOT what you thought they were. This is not your mom's romance, and as you can guess from the title, it has some pretty explicit scenes, which might turn off some readers. But if you stay with the book, you will find an honest look at marriage and relationships, and how sometimes letting go is the way to move on to something better. If you want a book that is more than your standard chick-lit, check out this book!
