Book Review and Giveaway: Demon's Curse by Alexa Egan

And welcome to something different- an historical paranormal romance from a new author!

Demon's Curse cover

Synopsis: The first novel in Alexa Egan’s Imnada Brotherhood trilogy, DEMON’S CURSE blends the historical and the paranormal, exploring the world of shapeshifters in Regency-era England.  When Bianca Parrino’s close friend Adam is murdered and she is suspected in his death, she is unwittingly drawn into the search for his killer. Soon, she’s questioning everything she believes—about her friend, about herself, and about a world she never knew existed: the world of the shape-shifting Imnada.

When Bianca meets Captain Mac Flannery at Adam’s funeral, she is introduced to the secret world of the Imnada, cursed to live their hours of darkness as their animal aspect as a result of a savage massacre during the Napoleonic wars.  Before long, Mac has more to contend with than Bianca’s overt mistrust, his ill-fated attraction to her, and his ongoing search for an end to the curse. Because Adam’s killer is back, and Mac is next on his list.

Review: This genre is not my typical read, but it sounded unique, so I was willing to give it a try! It is not exactly a fast paced book, but I finished it in 2 sittings. While it was not a bad read, and it had interesting sections, I found myself skimming and getting to the action scenes, which definitely kept my attention. Bianca was a strong female character and the scenes with her and Mac had great electricity. I normally love paranormal books (if done well), but in a way there was just too much to try to keep track of and understand (and unanswered questions)  that I almost felt like that part of it deserved to be in a different book. Again, it may be because I'm not a big historical romance reader, but it just felt like there were 2 novels in the book fighting it out for the reader's attention, and loosing you a lot. There is a prequel novella (Awaken the Curse), and I'm not sure if reading it would have helped or not. You can read excerpts from it, and this book on the author's website.

While not my cup of tea, for those who like paranormal or historical romances, you might find this a good read.
