You probably know magnesium oxide as an effective treatment for heartburn, upset stomachs, and acid indigestion, but did you know that magnesium levels can help with migraines?

Magnesium plays a role in various receptors in the brain, particularly those that are affected in migraines.in fact, our bodies use magnesium for more than 300 chemical processes each day! This includes wound healing and producing energy!

For some people, studies have found that taking a daily dose can be more effective than prescribed beta blockers, antidepressants or other drugs, as some migraine sufferers have a naturally low level of magnesium in their bodies, compared to people, who do not suffer from severe headaches or migraines. Who knew, that lack of magnesium could be a migraine trigger? It's something to discuss with your doctor, and a simple blood test can check to see if you are low!

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium is between 310 and 320 mg per day for an adult woman (between 400 and 420 mg per day for an adult man). The studies have shown that to preventing migraines, an effective magnesium level should be about 600 milligrams per day.

You can also increase magnesium, or magnesium oxide, in your diet naturally by eating more leafy greens, whole grains, avocados, nuts (like almonds and cashews) and even cocoa (has one of the highest amounts!). And drinking a lot of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages can actually leach the magnesium from your body! Taking heart, stomach or asthma medications can also leave you succeptible to lower levels.Even stress can cause a depletion (aha- there is the stress=migraine link we migraines sufferers know about!).

It is always important to consult a doctor, or medical professional, before dramatically increase the dose of any supplement, due to possible side effects from it, or with any other medication you are taking. For example, a higher level of magnesium can have a laxative effect, and may present stomach problems much worse.

I'll be checking my daily vitamin to see how much magnesium I'm getting, what about you?
