Did you know that rawhide treats offer very little nutritional value and can cause harm to your dog?
PetMatrix Chief Science Officer Martin Glinsky, Ph.D. explains “Rawhide is an extremely low-quality form of protein, not the type that animals need for nutrition. Both of our new rawhide-free dog products are 99.2 percent digestible, which reduces the potential for intestinal blockages – a problem that can occur when dogs swallow large pieces of rawhide treats."

Bet you didn't realize that did you? It's NOT a pretty sight, having to take an animal in for surgery to remove a blockage, and it can be fatal!

BUT, “Chew treats are an important part of every healthy dog’s diet since eating kibble alone doesn’t thoroughly exercise a dog’s mouth and can cause teeth to become disused and plaque-ridden.” continues Dr. Glinsky.

Petmatrix's (the makers of SmartBones) solution is their new SmartSticks and SmartChips, rawhide-free dog chew treat products. Similar to the original line of SmartBones, the new products are fortified with vitamins and minerals, and are 99.2% digestible (much easier on a dog’s digestive system than rawhide treats and even the highest quality dog foods, which are only 85% digestible). Both SmartSticks and SmartChips are available in two flavors – chicken and peanut butter.

We were sent a bag of each flavor for Marley to try.

smartchipFirst up was the SmartChips in Chicken flavor (they also come in Peanut Butter).

As you can see, they are sized just right for any size dog-small, medium or large.

And not only do they have chicken, they have peas and carrots, so your know your dog is getting some great tasting stuff here.

And because they are as hard as a brick (like rawhide bones), they are better for your dog's teeth.

What did Marley think of them?

marley and smartchipThe furball (her winter nickname, as she puts on about 15 POUNDS of fur) smelled Miss Grace and I walking up to the fence with one of the SmartChips and ran over and practically mauled me through the fence to get to it!

After I got her to sit, she waited patiently for Miss Grace to HAND it over!

What I didn't get a picture of was her running off with it, while inhaling. Sounded like a snorting train. Like she was trying to inhale all the chicken off of it, before stopped running. Then she sat and got down to business immediately. Hadn't seen the kid in about 16 hours, didn't CARE, had to CHEW!

ALL she cared about was the treat. And in about an hour it was totally gone. I think she was worried she wasn't going to get another one, so she sorta slowed up as she got to the end!

Now if I thought Marley was like an addict with the SmartChips, the "I GOTTA HAVE IT NOWs" started in earnest, as soon as she realized I had a Peanut Butter SnackStick in my hand, two days later.

I literally could NOT get a picture clicked quick enough of the fur flying at 90 mph, to and from the fence.

Walk? What walk?

Uh-uh. I'm BUSY!

We literally ceased to exist! Again they are the perfect size for any size dog (Marley only has about an inch in her mouth in the picture).

Yup- we have a SmartBones addict in the family now! I like the smaller sizes of the chips and sticks, as we can give them to her more often. And no disgusting rawhide bone being dragged around the yard for a week (ugh). SmartBones does offer rawhide free SmartBones in different sizes as well, if you have never seen them. They look like rawhide bones, but are flavored like these SmartChips and SmartSticks!

Both products are available in Chicken and Peanut Butter flavors at fine pet stores around the country and at www.SmartBones.com (free shipping on orders over $25).

Check out the entire line- you'll be as please as we were, and YOUR dogs will be addicted to them, as Marley is! LOL.

And luck you- I get to give ONE winner a bag of SmartChips AND a bag of SmartSticks!
