Book Review and Giveaway: My Inappropriate Life by Heather Mcdonald

Since we're post-Easter, it's time to share with you Heather's newest book!

My Inappropriate Life cover

Synopsis: In her New York Times bestseller You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again, Heather McDonald recounted her adventures as an unwilling virgin in Hollywood. Now happily married with three children, Heather writes for and can be seen weekly on E! Channel’s hugely successful show, Chelsea Lately, and also stars in the show’s spin-off,After Lately.
But life as a grown-up—even a pretend grown-up—has its challenges:
  • Heather’s a working mom with parents who live next door
  • a stay-at-home husband who doesn’t give an inch
  • a sister who keeps asking for one of her eggs
  • and a group of neighborhood moms who stopped talking to her when she took her kids to a stripper pool party in Vegas.
  • Plus, she still remains friends with the Kardashians >
  • and collects Bravo Housewives like they are bottles of wine.
Chelsea Handler’s partner-in-crime, and comic writer, Heather recounts her misadventures with a disarming candor all her own

Review: There is a reason the subtitle for this book says: Some Material Not Suitable for Small Children, Nuns, or Mature Adults. If you don't believe me, read the forward. Which is probably why it took me SO long to read the book. Pretty much like the show, I can only take it, now and then, and in small doses, so I'd read a chapter or two. Roll my eyes and put it away for awhile. The book is a conglomerate of styles- part memoir, part celebrity fanatic, part humor writing, part sarcastic fiction, and part commentary on modern life. Whew. Which when coupled with the "no censors in this book' attitude, means it might be waaaaay to much for some people. Or like me, taken a chapter at a time.

As a parent, there are many things you can laugh with Heather about- the kids getting jealous of her dressing a large stuffed monkey up in THEIR clothes, to travel in the carpool lane, trying to find parents with kids to hang out that aren't crazy weird, or making sure your kids get into a good school (and stay there). As a spouse, her tales the' battles between the spouses' will make you nod your head in agreement (husband can spends hours golfing with a guy and not know how many kids he has).
Those were the parts of the book I enjoyed at laughed a lot at.

Then there is the celebrity stuff. I'm sure her fanatic obsession with Chelsea is meant to be funny, but I found myself not reading it that way and wondering if she's so popular, financially ok (hello, buying $200 dresses) and strong on her own, she has such a devoted fanaticism, stalking?, to her. Especially when she tells you over and over about the REALLY bad taste tricks she pulls on Heather (sex toy in basket of items for an elementary  Catholic school auction?). Seriously by the end of the book, I no longer wanted to watch the show.

Which is why I know if you are HUGE fans of the show you will ADORE this book for the 'inside look' and getting to know more about Heather.I just wanted to scream at Heather," get your own show about parenthood and marriage"! She's hilarious on those topics, and COULD play it without all the 'Chelsea-isms'. Let's aim for an PG-13 or R rated adult series though, ok? So if you're not a fanatic on the show, you may find parts of the books funny, and still get some great topics out of it to talk to your friends about.
