Synopsis: In the Garden District of New Orleans, an eccentric researcher has kept a rougarou frozen in his basement freezer for forty years. When a movie producer wants answers to a killing at a posh resort, Wyatt Thomas is called into service, to solve the crime. When a hurricane takes direct aim at the venerable old city, Wyatt and N.O.P.D. detective Tony Nicosia must deal with the thawing werewolf, before he can solve the mystery of the resort, and survive the creature, or creatures trying to kill him.
Review: This is the third book in the Wyatt Thomas series (following Big Easy and City of Spirits), and the first I have read. I can't wait to go find the other two to read. Wilder has a flair for writing about NOLA and it's surrounding area, and natives will recognize places and areas with ease. His characters are not only endearing, they will grab you and keep you involved in what happens to them! NOLA is the perfect setting for this novel, with it's Gothic structures, swamp lore, and love for the unworldly.
The author gets so many nuances right about life in Louisiana, post Hurricane Katrina, about the changes it brought about, and the lack of recovery in some areas. This only adds more to the novel, making it so much more realistic and providing accurate back stories for the characters I would love to see this series as a cable TV series, but I don't know if all the "Lousiianaisms" could translate well to the TV screen!
You'll want to read this book in one sitting, it is so action packed and filled with great prose!
About the Author: Eric Wilder grew up in Louisiana spending many sweltering evenings listening to ghost stories and tales of voodoo. Though just a boy when he heard it, he never forgot his grandmother’s story about rougarous haunting south Louisiana swamps. He now lives in Oklahoma, about a mile from historic Route 66, with wife Marilyn. Read his website for more info
