Synopsis: Greek author Harry Papas was studying at the Department of Dietetics of the University of Athens at the age of 19, weighing 280 pounds. He decided it was crucial that he find a solution to his weight problem. Mr. Papas to created Slimmer, his own diet plan which helped him regain his health, lose 110 pounds and remain slim since 1996. He established his own successful Health and Diet Centre in Athens. He incorporated his successful nutrition program into a book to help as many people as possible. Slimmer immediately became the most successful and best-selling diet and health book ever published in Greece.

Slimmer is a simple nutrition plan: a delicious, low-fat Mediterranean diet with revolutionary, fat-burning ingredients (like spicy mustard, lemon, and vinegar) coupled with the self-awareness to combat the triggers that contribute to weight gain. Unlike other diets, Slimmer’s three-cycle, richly varied meal plan doesn’t restrict you from enjoying carbs, sugars, or fats, and it doesn’t enforce calorie counting. Rather, the nine-week program is designed to help you to adopt a simpler lifestyle and lifelong healthy habits.

Review: If you need a diet that is both restrictive, yet has free days, this diet might be for you, especially if you love fruits and veggies! The 9 week cycle is broken down into 3 cycles- each of 21 days each. The cycles progress, with more fat burning ingredients and combinations of foods with each cycle, to help keep your weight loss going. You also get free days, where you can have a regular meals, but must have a salad as your side dish.In theory you will be used to the smaller meals from the cycle, and won't pig out too much. Plus, you also get 2 happy moments per day, for small indulgences, like a cappucino, pudding or cookie, to help ease any cravings you might have. The included.diet recipes are very simple, and include ingredients that are available at most local grocery stores. Always a plus! Like other reviewers though, my complaint is that the recipes included might say to 'serve with rice', but doesn't tell you how much rice per serving would satisfy the dinner requirement. Thus you have to go back and search that out in the book. It can be found, just aggravating that not mentioned in the recipe. Most of the recipes are intended to make for 2 meals, which is fine, if you like leftovers. Otherwise, you might want to half the recipe if possible. Minor irritations aside, it's not a bad diet plan.

As a plus, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has agreed that Papas’ diet is a HEALTHY one! In the Feb. 25th, 2013 study titled: Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease with a Mediterranean Diet, the NEJM confirmed that 'the Mediterranean Diet is the best, life-long, satisfying way to eat to be healthy and fit. Among persons at high cardiovascular risk, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced the incidence of major cardiovascular events,” the article stated. But like any diet, always check with your doctor before starting.

To give you an idea of how simple, yet decent the recipes are, here's one that satisfies even picky eaters!

Slimmer Chicken Á La Crème

Ingredients:
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 cup thinly sliced white mushrooms (we used creminis)
3 Tablespoons dry white wine (we used vermouth)
1 cup low sodium chicken broth (or water)
1/2 cup low-fat evaporated milk
2 teaspoons prepared mustard (we used Dijon)
1 teaspoon cornstarch

Directions:

1. In a large skillet, over medium heat, heat the olive oil, and saute the chicken pieces until just barely golden.
2. Set chicken aside.
3. In the emptied skillet, saute the onion and mushrooms until slightly browned.
4. Add the chicken back, along with the wine, and stir through.
5. Add the chicken broth (or water), and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until chicken pieces are cooked through.
6, Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the evaporated milk, mustard, and cornstarch, and stir until smooth.
7. Add the milk mixture to the simmered chicken, and stir through, continuing to cook until the sauce is thickened.
8.Taste, and adjust seasoning as you like.

Now for our family, just adding salt and pepper left this dish leaning toward the bland side, even with the mustard and onion. We have made a similar dish before, and we prefer to use holy trinity (onion, green and red bell pepper and celery) in place of the onion. Which is fine, as it's all veggies. We also add some Cajun spice to the last step.
