April 2nd is National PB&J Day!

Did you know that when you make a PB&J that:
  • you are shrinking your carbon footprint
  • you reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution
  • you cut back on habitat destruction
  • you conserve water

Didn't know that did you?

Just look at these numbers:
  • your carbon footprint is shrunk by the equivalent of 2.5 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, over an average animal-based lunch like a hamburger, a tuna sandwich, grilled cheese, or chicken nuggets.
  • That 2.5 pounds is equatable to about forty percent of what you’d save driving around for the day in a hybrid instead of a standard sedan.
  • Have a PB&J over a ham sandwich or a hamburger, and you save almost 3.5 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Having a PB&J can save 12 to 50 square feet of land from deforestation, over-grazing, and pesticide and fertilizer pollution
  • Did you know that a PB&J can save 280 gallons of water over a hamburger? In fact, three PB&Js in a one month period, instead of hamburgers, will save about as much water as switching to a low-flow shower head. Yup, plants require less water than animals!.

You might not end global warming by eating one PB&J, but each time you choose it, you make a difference, just like taking out the recycling, or taking public transportation to work instead of driving. And remember Earth Day is April 22! So take the pledge today!
