Children's Book Review: Bedtime Math by Laura Overdeck, Illus by Jim Paillot

This past weekend I told you about the Bedtime Math National Pajama Party, and here is my review of the Bedtime Math book!

Synopsis: Our mission: to make math a fun part of kids’ everyday lives. 

We all know it’s wonderful to read bedtime stories to kids, but what about doing math? Many generations of Americans are uncomfortable with math and numbers, and too often we hear the phrase, "I’m just not good at math!" For decades, this attitude has trickled down from parents to their kids, and we now have a culture that finds math dry, intimidating, and just not cool. 

Bedtime Math wants to change all that. Inside this book, families will find fun, mischief-making math problems to tackle—math that isn’t just kid-friendly, but actually kid-appealing. With over 100 math riddles on topics from jalapeños and submarines to roller coasters and flamingos, this book bursts with math that looks nothing like school. And with three different levels of challenge (wee ones, little kids, and big kids), there’s something for everyone. We can make numbers fun, and change the world, one Bedtime Math puzzle at a time.

Review As you can see the book si fun- it isn't torturous or hard to grasp- it is easy,  kid friendly and may even give parents a pause in trying to figure out the answer! The book is a aimed at kids ages 3-8, but I think you could go to 10 easily, especially if older kids are helping younger siblings determine the correct answer. And don't sweat that- the answers are on each page, just printed in SMALL print and upside down, so no cheating kiddos! 

jim's illustrations are bright and funny, and totally charming! They help make the book! I love that the book can grow with your child, or be used together as a family, You could also use it for homeschooling, as it gives math problems in a new and fun way to keep kids from being bored!

We highly recommend this book as pure fun!

About the Illustrator: Jim lives in Arizona with his family, two dogs and and almost any other animal that scratches on their front door.
