In Power Tom,Tom sports a female superhero costume while trying to subdue three cat burglars. Miss Grace laughed herself SILLY throughout that one! Tom tries to impress a lady cat with his singing and guitar playing on Kitty Cat Blues. These and several other exciting cartoons await Tom and Jerry fans on this must-own release.
Originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, in 1940 (that's the original title graphic above!) Tom and Jerry emerged during Hollywood’s golden age of animation and became one of the most popular cartoon series in existence. They conceived and directed the shorts for 18 years for MGM Studios! In fact, the original series is notable for having won seven Academy Awards, tying with Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies as the theatrical animated series with the most Oscars! Who knew? After Churck Jones directed the shorts for a few years in the 1960s, Hanna Barbera studios came back in the 1970s with hit television series. It is amazing to me that literally 3 generations of our families have grown up with, loved and laughed along with Tom & Jerry!
The shorts have always focus on the never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom’s attempts to capture Jerry. Jerry, however, is clever and quick on his feet so Tom hardly ever manages to catch him. The shorts have been criticized for the excessive violence, and that is one reason why I didn't let Miss Grace watch them til she was old enough to understand if was all make believe and doesn't happen like that in the real world. Amazingly to our modern thought, they was never any blood or gore in any scene in these shorts. The beauty of the old movie censors!
While watching this set with Miss Grace I was struck by how much CLASSICAL music is in these shorts. In fact, their musical director Scott Bradley created the short scores with elements of jazz and pop music as well. He even included movie songs from MGM films, including The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me In St. Louis! No wonder our generation and our parents' seemed to have a greater internal musical reference library- we heard the music on cartoon!
All in all these cartoons have a lot to offer elementary school age children and Miss Grace and I give this collection a 2 thumbs up approval rating! It's a great way to give the kids some indoor time, with a family tradition, when it gets too hot to be outside in the afternoon! So if you, and your kids, love Tom & Jerry, be sure to pick this DVD up!
