After releasing their 2010 self-titled debut, Court Yard Hounds, to much critical acclaim, sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire (you may know them as two-thirds of Dixie Chicks) were ready to get back into the studio“We’re a band, not a side project. We like our sound, and we’re going to continue to do this, and share something new this time around.” Emily Robison couldn't be more clear about the game plan for the duo. When one thinks of the Dixie Chicks, you pretty much think controversy, but there was no denying the TALENT of Emily and Martie, and all the instruments they can play, not to mention singing and songwriting. So it is great that they have chosen to stay on this path and have their OWN band, different from the Dixie Chicks.

This new album, Amelita, contains 11 new tracks. Robison and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010, a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison’s divorce. “I’ve been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things,” says Robison. “Now, I’ve opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world. I think it’s not only a more hopeful album, but it’s more… well fun."

They are also about to embark on a US tour, kicking off with Lollapalooza next month! "I love this band...the way we explore new aspects of ourselves and what we can expect from each other, both musically and as people," says Martie. "We are close. Plus, being on the road and being in the studio is like my spa from the everyday challenges of just being a mom.

Basically this a country edged pop album. Sort of like the standby crossover suv- best of both worlds- pop hooks, country melodies and excellent instrument playing. There is nothing you will hate, nothing the kids can't listen to, and nothing that you can't sway your feet to.

Amelita Track Listing:
  1. Sunshine- the lead single, it is cheery and bright like its title
  2. Amelita- the album name, it reminds me of old time country, a la Marty Robinson
  3. The World Smiles- I kept hearing Taylor Swift while listening to this one- very uplifting
  4. Aimless Upward- my second fav song- with a little change, it could be a number one Christian song, I;m sure
  5. Guy Like You- a jazzy song that will have you swinging your foot along with it
  6. Rock All Night- memories from your teenage years will take you back with this song
  7. Phoebe- blue grass tinged, probably my fav song from the album- I think it showcases the sisters talents the best
  8. Divided- for some reason I got a Carly Simon/James Taylor vibe off this one
  9. Gets You Down- another song that brings back 70s themes and music
  10. Watch Your Step-  Sheryl Crowe would be right at home with this one!
  11. The Road You Take- I think this one is the most heartfelt from the songwriters- it speaks of the path they are on now, and where they have come from
The sisters strength lies in their live performances, check out this clip:

Overall this is not a bad cd, but I think the sisters still haven't found 'their' unique sound. This albums shows a wide varying of influences, but no cohesive sound on each song that makes you go "yup only the Court Yard Hounds could sing THAT song". I think part of it is they are still trying 'not to be the Dixie Chicks'. A lot of what WAS the Dixie Chicks, was Emily and Martie. And I think that may hold this album back, but I think they are on their way, and I hold out hopes that their next album will find them on surer ground, and having found that uniqueness that will bring them a multi-platinum album.
