As I mentioned on my book review post on Tuesday, I have never been able to knit, and I have always wanted to learn how to Tunisian Crochet, because it is a very close resemblance to knitting. I had always heard it was very difficult, so I been hesitant. So when Annie's offered me a chance to learn by video, I thought, ok maybe I CAN learn how!
The Annie's video series covers all sorts of crafting, from yarn work, to quilting to sewing to beading and even papercrafts! The videos have instructors who are masters in their field, like Kim Guzman (my class instructor) and Krista Southern, and very well respected. You get recommended items, downloadable patterns and required items, and then videos walking through each of them.
For my class that included a Honeycomb Scarf, Stockinette Hat with Felted Option, and a gorgeous Spiraling Miters Crossover Shawlette ! All together you get to learn the foundation Tunisian stitch and then 3 basics stitches: the Tunisian Simple Stitch, Tunisian Knit Stitch, and Tunisian Purl stitch
For my review period, I just did not have enough time to complete a project, but I started all three, so I could see how the class sections went. After some initial missteps (after I realized that I need to enlarge the screen to better see the actual handwork of the instructor), things went better. I started with the Honeycomb Scarf. Here are some sample pictures of my various steps:
As you can see I started with a gorgeous red heather yarn, but soon realized I could not SEE my stitches very well, so switched to a variegated yarn, thinking it would be easier to see. As you can see, it went much better, my only problem was keeping my stitches consistent, as it was hard to get used to the very LONG crochet hook - the rows above are 18 and 20! The hook is almost as long as your computer keyboard, as it is made for making afghans. Unfortunately those were the only Tunisian hooks I could find locally- they do have shorter ones.
When I got to the hat video, I realized I probably should have started with it, as to me it was easier, and the video showed more of the close up stitch work, so it was much easier to learn.
I ended up making a cuff for Miss Grace from my sample, as she fell in love with it, and as it naturally curls, it a natural bracelet! I was thrilled that my stitching was pretty close to the instructors, as I was still struggling with the hook and stitch sizes. I will definitely be using both of these patterns, if not for Christmas presents, then for cold weather wear for the family.
I didn't have time to start the last scarf/shawlette, which is one that I REALLY want to make! I need to get one more heathered yarns, before I can start it. I will definitely update you when I get it finished. Isn't it just too gorgeous?
All in all, I was very happy with the class, and my only recommendation for making it better would be more stops by the instructor to show how the project looks, close up, after the different rows were instructed upon. For a beginner stitcher, this is really needed. I would definitely purchase more classes from Annie's to learn the crafts that I do not know how to do!
