Vacation Files: Ross Barnett Reservoir, Jackson, MS

i'm bored button

Last week I shared some photos of Miss Grace and I at the Ross Barnett Reservoir south launch in Jackson, MS. After we took those photos we went about 15 miles up the Natch Trace, following the reservoir and came to a favorite bluff lookout area of Grandma's! It was perfect for checking out the wildlife!

The bluff overlooks a large bend, and is full of water lily fields that practically cross all the way over side to side! Judging my the fishing that was going on, a decent place to fish too. Though you would NOT catch any of fishing down below, as you will see why below.

The area is known for their BLUE dragonflies- I actually was able to get one to sit still long enough, without Miss Grace chasing it, to get a picture!

And the reason why I wouldn't fish in those lily fields?

 Ross Barnett Reservoir 2

Yup, not 1 but 2 alligators- make that 7-8 FOOT alligators!
(the pictures are diagonal, body and head shot for each one!_

I heard one bellowing and told Miss Grace to listen- it was the same sounds we had heard at the Reptile Exhibit at the MS Museum of Science, and I remembered the sound meant it was calling out to ANOTHER alligator, and sure enough, when we swung our attention to the left, there it was. AND we saw at least 4 more heads pop up in the lily field to the top right of Miss Grace's head in the top picture!

Miss Grace was equally thrilled and freaked out over seeing alligators in their NATURAL environment! It's one thing to see them in the zoo, aquarium or alligator farm, but to see them where people SWIM and boat, in a lake situation versus the swamp, was totally different! The area was SO serene and pretty, and then bamm, there lurked the danger! Luckily there was a good 25 foot drop down to the water and straight up, so we don't think they crawl that far up, but it was definitely an educational experience for Miss Grace to put 'Swamp People' into reality for her!
