Continuing our dental care topic for the day, here's some really great things to think about this Halloween season!

It’s a big season for athletics but consider limiting sports drinks during games as they are usually loaded with sugar and lemonade is also high in acidity putting tooth enamel at greater risk.
On Halloween, be selective with the candies you allow your children to consume. Sticky, gooey treats will remain on the teeth longer, allowing the bacteria in the mouth to produce more acids which cause cavities. Sucking on lollipops and candy canes over a long period of time keeps the mouth sugared, causing more tooth decay than a candy bar which is consumed quickly.
Believe it or not, certain sweets are actually better for their teeth than others. If you're packing treats in your little one's lunch consider chocolate rather than potato chips as it is better for your children’s teeth since the chocolate will wash off easier than the chips will. They get stuck in the nooks and crannies just waiting there for the bacteria to attack and cause cavities.
Whether at school or on a play date, warn your children never to open a bottle cap with their teeth as in many cases, the metal cap will win, and a tooth can become broken.
Lastly, make brushing fun by letting your child pick out his or her favorite colored toothbrush. Your children should learn to look forward to brushing. Turn this necessary chore into an exciting event and reward them each time they brush.
For my fellow Gluten-Free kid parents- check out the list from the Celiac Disease Association's of the 2013 Gluten-Free candy!
