February was National Heart Month, and most of us listed and nodded our heads,
and may have even made some changes in our diet and lifestyle.

But are you STILL making them?

With Miss Grace's diet, we have all tried to do better in our house!

We have added more fresh vegetables to every meal, watch the processed food we buy, and generally have been seeking out healthier items on the menu when we go out to eat. It's not always easy (especially for a 7 year old), but the choices are ones that benefit everyone in the family! our pantry has seen a HUGE change!

Even little things like switching to a MUCH lower sodium soup can result in BIG changes for your heart! Three-quarters of the world's population consumes more than TWICE the daily recommended amount of salt. Do you know where most of that comes from?

Nope, not THAT one!

How about from the foods that most of us eat every day: breads and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, poultry, soup and sandwiches

Were you surprised?

I used to be, but with the lifestyle changes we have made at home, I have spent more time than ever reading nutrition labels, and I have been SHOCKED by how much sodium is in food aimed at kids! We as parents really have to read labels and determine if a packaged food is right for our child!

Recently in New Orleans, the American Heart Association presented their findings from the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study, that included 303 medical institutions from 50 countries around the world. They determined in that study that sixty percent of cardiovascular deaths included, were linked to salt intake in men, and 40 percent in women. Scary isn't it? Heart attacks were responsible for more than 40 percent of the deaths, strokes were behind another 40 percent and other types of heart disease accounted for the rest. Nearly one million of all these deaths -- 40 percent of them -- were considered "premature" because they occurred in adults younger than 69 years old.

With stats like that, how do you combat the risks?

Eat healthy-more veggies and fruits, exercise more and reduce salt and fat in your diet!

  1. These recipes look delicious. Another healthy recipe is one I am cooking tonight. It's a slow-cooker recipe. Layer sliced onions, sliced apples, and a 2.5 lb pork tenderloin in a slow cooker. Mix cinnamon with home-made chicken broth and other seasonings you like. Pour broth over the top of the meat. Cook on high for about 6 hours. It smells and tastes delicious!
