Welcome to our first review as part of the Booksparks Summer Reading Challenge!

Synopsis:

Thirty-three-year-old Shea Rigsby has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas—a small college town that lives and dies by football, a passion she unabashedly shares. Raised alongside her best friend, Lucy, the daughter of Walker’s legendary head coach, Clive Carr, Shea was too devoted to her hometown team to leave. Instead she stayed in Walker for college, even taking a job in the university athletic department after graduation, where she has remained for more than a decade.

But when an unexpected tragedy strikes the tight-knit Walker community, Shea’s comfortable world is upended, and she begins to wonder if the life she’s chosen is really enough for her. As she finally gives up her safety net to set out on an unexpected path, Shea discovers unsettling truths about the people and things she has always trusted most—and is forced to confront her deepest desires, fears, and secrets.

Review:
This book is as Southern as Southern gets- Football and the 'gods' and culture it creates. Reading it, I could easily think of people in my life, who were the characters in real life! This book is so much more than a quick chick lit read on the beach! It's thought provoking about where the line between right and wrong is, of what is allowed for the greater good, and how what we perceive is not always the truth, but colored by our experiences and beliefs. That's NOT to say it's a subtle charmer of a romance novel though! It's funny (as in laugh out loud funny), with characters that will worm their way into your heart! You may find yourself rooting for a sequel, like I did! This is THE beach read of the Summer- I recommend getting 2 or 3 copies, because you may not get your copies back once you loan them out!

  1. I can't read much anymore (I use audio books now) but this sounds like a real charmer sure. Not too much of a romance novel, but just enough to keep ya hooked. Sounds like a great summer "listen".
