Blue Orange Games is one of our favorite game companies, for some very good reasons,
so Miss Grace and I were thrilled to be able to check out their latest game for kids ages 7 and up!
Opposing sheep herds go to head to fluffy head in a strategy game the whole family will love. The goal is to occupy the most pastures with your sheep. On their turn, players split a stack of their sheep and move a portion as far is it can go in a straight line to a new pasture. Watch out for sneaky sheep and plan your moves carefully to fence out your foe! A different playing board is assembled before every game, so Battle Sheep is full of new challenges every time you play! Recently released, it's already received numerous awards such a Parent's Choice Award and a Tillywig Award.
The game is based on 2-4 players. It isn't really a team game, but more individual strategy. The goal is to work on abstract thinking, focus, and paying attention, all skills children need to learn!
With 2 people playing, we each set up 4 pasture boards- they all had to touch, and were each given a set off sheep. The basic idea is to surround the opposite sheep and 'fence them out'. As you can see Miss Grace made quick work of me and fenced out 4 sheep of mine within the first 10 minutes!
Unfortunately, she still needs to work on attention span and forward thinking, as she then later got fenced in herself, and found herself on the loosing side of the fence. She did better on the 2nd game and rousted me. It is definitely a game where experience helps in understanding better strategy, and your kids will get better at it, the more they play! An average game lasts about 15-20 minutes. She is now addicted to it!
I love how the game is boxed- all your 'sheep' stay in place, as do your pastures! Little things like this help make me love Blue Orange! You can tell they think of everything- great storage and sturdy cardboard box, means the game will last through years and years of play! Do you know I have board games that I am playing with Miss Grace that are almost 40 years old? I love that type of tradition, and we're thrilled to add Battle Sheep to our list of beloved board games!
