We've been talking about parenting and teens this week,
and today I have a great book about kids and social media!

Growing Up Social cover

Synopsis:

Is technology bringing your family closer together or driving you farther apart?

Children today are no longer playing hide-and-seek outside or curling up with a good book—instead they’ve been introduced to a world of constant digital entertainment through television, video games, and mobile devices. And while technology has the potential to add value to our lives and families, it can also erode a sense of togetherness and hinder a child’s emotional and social development.

In Growing Up Social, Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane will empower you with the necessary tools to make positive changes…starting today. Through stories, wit, and wisdom, you’ll discover how to take back your home from an over dependence on screens. Plus, you’ll learn to teach the five A+ skills that every healthy child needs to master: affection, appreciation, anger management, apology, and attention.

•Equip your child to be relationally rich in a digital world
•Replace mindless screen time with meaningful family time
•Establish simple boundaries that make a huge difference
•Discover what’s working for families that have become screen savvy
•Learn healthy ways to occupy your child while you get things done

Now is the time to equip your child to live with screen time, not for screen time. No phone, tablet, or gaming device can teach your child how to have healthy relationships—only you can.

Review:

Modern technology is wonderful, but it HAS brought us apart- our amount on inter-personal communications are shortened and reduced daily. So should a parent eschew modern technology? No, how about finding the happy medium, that benefits everyone? That is what this book is about- teaching parents to find the middle ground and take BACK their kids childhoods!

It is hard when the kids are screaming for screen time to not let them have it. It's easy to hand over a tablet or cell phone in the car, to keep the kids from hitting each other or yelling and screaming, isn't it. But what is being missed? Are they seeing the deer on the side of the roadway, are they seeing the river flowing under the bridge you are crossing, are you missing out on conversation that could have a huge impact on your kids? What about their table manners? Do they have to be occupied with a cell phone at a restaurant while waiting for their meal, or can they handle a conversation with adults? Which of these will serve them later in life?

This book talks more than just about social media and it's influence on our lives. It talks about how our culture has changed and how we can help to get our kids back on the right (moral) track. It also discusses the 5 love languages of children and different parental techniques, and how it all works together for a happier family unit. The book included Parent Resources and Discussion Guides for every chapter , that are perfect for reviewing as a family, and even for family bible study. It is the perfect book to give to parents of young children, to stop harmful habits before they start, and to those of older children, to make them stop and realize what they are doing.
